Argumentative Essay 1 The topic of this argumentative essay is whether the United States should keep the penny or stop the production and distribution of it. My claim is yes, we should stop the production of the penny. My reasons being that pennies are a waste of space(Jeff Sommer), it costs more to produce them than what they are worth(Jeff Sommer), and with pennies gone, retail sales will be rounded up or down(Jeff Sommer). The counterclaim is that we should not stop the production and distribution of the penny. For instance, Mr. Velde says that, “In a place like New York, a 99-cent price of pizza might go down to 95 cents rather than $1 to avoid crossing that higher price threshold.” From that example, you can take in the cheaper prices we would have,and people would beckon more patience seeing that there would be no more digging in your purse to find that one penny to even the price. When you are buying clothes or Starbucks, you would no longer have to second guess yourself if you brought enough pennies in or if you even have pennies on you for that one product that calls for a cent. There would be no worry if there is a fountain nearby that you can toss it into instead of letting it pile up onto your dresser. Without pennies, purchasing products would be less of a hassle.
