Too much time is spent in vain searching for lost pennies. According to MIT graduate Jeff Gore, mentioned in the article Penny Pinchers by Rick Khan, four hours are spent per year looking for pennies. “If each person's time is worth $15 per hour, then each person loses $60 per year at a cost of the nation of over $15 billion per year” Come on people! 15 billion a year! According to New York Times writer William Safire, the penny has become bothersome and “almost worthless” because today's Americans are unable to buy anything with a penny; As a result of their uselessness, the American people drop the pennies into piggy banks cheer coaches and trash cans where they are never found again. Why continue the production of a Currency that almost immediately drops as I collation? Although some may argue that the penny represents a standing memory of Abraham Lincoln the face of the penny and patriotism, I still maintain that we are reminded of president Lincoln not only by the five-dollar bill but by the Lincoln Memorial as well. In fact, if honest Abe were alive today he would be disappointed in how much time and money the American people are wasting year to year in his name.
Ultimately, the prodigal penny should be abolished because the coin devours valuable time, money, and resources that could be put to better use elsewhere. It is time to give up the search; get your hands out of the couch cushions. Stop searching through the dark abyss of your purses and bags. You won’t find much and whatever you find will not be worth much
