How To Kill A Mockingbird Study Guide Chapter 14
1. “Nature sent him into the world strong and lusty, in a thriving condition, wearing his own hair on his head, the proper branches of this reasoning vegetable, until the axe of intemperance has lopped off his green boughs, and left him in a withered trunk;”

Nature sent man into the world in its purified state until indulgence has corrupted its being.

2.“he then flies to art, and puts on a periwig, valuing himself upon an unnatural bundle of hairs (all covered with powder) that never grew on his head;”

Man escapes corruption by raising his status through wearing a wig.

4. “Partial judges that we are of our own excellences, and other men’s defaults!”

We judge our own merit just as we judge others.

5. “But a broomstick, perhaps you will say, is an emblem of a tree standing on it’s head;”

A broomstick is a symbol of an upside down tree.

6. “and pray, what is a man but a topsy-turvy creature, his animal faculties perpetually mounted on his rational, his head where his heels should be, groveling on the earth!”

Rather than thinking and using his head, man uses his instincts instead.

7. “And yet, with all his faults, he sets up to be a universal reformer and corrector of abuses, a remover of grievances, rakes into every slut’s corner of nature, bringing hidden corruption to the light, and raises a mighty dust where there was none before;”

Although man has his imperfections, he cleanses the world, sheds light into problems and solves them.

8. “sharing deeply all the while in the very same pollutions he pretends to sweep away;”

Man lives in the same dirtied environment he pretends to

Many men and women have graced this world with their inspirational leadership and never ending tenacity. But amongst these men and women, there is a more selected group that stands out from them all. Although each may be from a different time era, their attributes and determination remain fairly the same. Even through their diverse profession greatness and excellence never fails to shine from them. However, the very same intentions that those men and women long to accomplish reflect the type of person, good or bad, they seem to us. People like Adolf Hitler, Theodore Roosevelt, and Mahatma Ghandi all have influenced millions of people around the world: as mentioned before, good and bad.…

There are two conflicting views on human nature. Chinese scholar Hsun Tzu believed that man’s nature is evil and when man acts “good” it is only the result of what he called “conscious activity.” In the text, he describes conscious activity as “the part [of man] that can be acquired by learning and brought to completion by effort.” In other words, Hsun Tzu believed that man is naturally selfish, and that unless there are rules and principles put in place to guide men away from his natural inclinations, society would disintegrate into chaos and violence. Mencius, another Chinese scholar and fellow student of Confucius, believed the opposite. He thought that human nature is ultimately good and that people learn to be evil from various influences and experiences in their life.…

Man is the sum total of his thoughts and actions. In her novel “We The Living”, Andrei voices out Rand’s idea of man as a complete whole, in his speech to the Party club when he declares that ‘….man is born, alone, complete, an end in himself.’ In the process of evolution external forces have redesigned and reinforced certain set patterns of behaviour thus affecting the inherent nature of man. The control exerted on man’s thoughts made it difficult for him to act as per the whims of his body, gradually conditioning his emotional responses to what is deemed as morally and ethically sound. Behaviour was slowly categorized into ‘good’ and ‘bad’, ‘acceptable’ and ‘unacceptable’.…
