his job. Then, while in the hospital, he was scrolling through the internet and saw an ad for an autonomous car for sale. It was perfect, as it would allow him the ability to commute everywhere he did like before, and still be able to keep his job. Even though he was paralyzed, Joe is still able to keep commuting back and forth like before. Autonomous cars have the potential to truly change our roads forever. They would improve the flow of traffic, and allow for the disabled to commute like regular drivers. Also, it would lower the amount of traffic collisions due to human error and allow for better overall vehicle safety. Once the kinks are worked out, Autonomous cars should be ready to run on our roadways. Autonomous cars have long been a concept and idea that have bounced around in the minds of people. The ability to let your car drive for you while you sit back and relax has been around since the 1950s. One of the first concepts being GM’s Firebird with the idea for the car was the driver sitting back while it travels down an automated highway. This was just a figment of many people’s imaginations as time went on. Then, the 2000s came along it became more of a legitimate possibility than just a concept on a display. These cars are most likely soon going to be on our roads and in showrooms. Currently, Autonomous cars are being developed more and more for road use, and they are showing progress towards being able to be on open roads in traffic. Still, the technology is incredibly unproven and these cars are an open book when it comes to dealing with tougher traffic situations.
Autonomous cars will help traffic move along better and improve commute times for all drivers. One reason for these predicted improvements is the complete control that the car will have over all the functions and systems of the car.”Intelligent vehicles guide drivers through traffic, navigate to a destination, automate driving, guard against accidents, and perform other intelligent functions in concert with other vehicles or the highway infrastructure”. Travel and commutes are always unknown as some days you might have a fast commute with limited traffic and other days it might take an hour to travel a half a mile it really depends on the day and the traffic. With Autonomous cars the travel times will be quick and consistent due to the lack of human error and overly tentative drivers on the road. With the autonomous technology, cars will brake, accelerate and travel at safer following distances. which would lead to quicker travel times and just more efficient overall traffic. With traffic moving quicker and more efficient more cars will be able to travel on roads. “The U.S. Department of Transportation projects that the 2.9 trillion U.S. highway vehicle miles traveled in 2005 will increase by 60% to 4.7 trillion in 2030. Computer models indicate that automation would double or even triple highway capacity.” Due to the improved speed and flow of traffic, more cars will be able to fit on the highway. This means that cars will be traveling quicker , and getting on and off the highway and the road at quicker rates and getting go their remote locations much faster than before. This would be a huge improvement over current traffic where you never know what could be coming up on the road, roads without human error will be efficient and safer.
Intelligent self-driving cars will allow for disabled people to get around just like regular humans and commute where they want.
Handicap people are not able to travel by themselves at their own leisure which is a freedom they don't get to experience like non-disabled people.“Just imagine the freedom it would bring to those who are disabled. Take, for instance, the legally blind man who earlier in 2012 took a spin in Google's self-driving car to go to Taco Bell and then pick up his dry cleaning”. For him it was most likely an amazing feeling.Being able to commute to where he wanted to without someone else driving him and being able to have complete freedom over where they are able to travel. It's something that non-disabled people truly take for granted. The ability for the disabled and elderly to be able to travel wherever they please is a big deal, it would be a big step in making lives easier for disabled members of society. “International law describes a driver as “any person” who should “at all times” be “able to control” the vehicle. If a disabled person were, today, to travel in a fully autonomous system, there would still be a need for an additional passenger “able to control” the vehicle, even if his or her presence were entirely passive”. As of right now, drivers are considered to be anyone who can control the vehicle at all times. With the ability of an autonomous car to drive itself, the disabled occupant of the car will be able to be classified as a driver due to the fact they technically have complete control of the car. This will allow them to travel without passengers unless they would like passengers in the car. This will allow them to commute and travel on roads just as if they did not have their disability that limited them from driving in the first place. They could commute to a job,go out to run errands and enjoy drives at their leisure. So many opportunities and possibilities would open for them with the ability to control their own
automobile and go where and when they go to places. Those who oppose the idea of autonomous cars believe that these cars will not be able to handle bad weather, and that the technology is not ready for the road. The cars cannot drive in heavy rain or snow, and they have a hard time making a left-hand turn when there is oncoming traffic. They also cannot read hand signals – say, for example, if a traffic cop was directing vehicles. While Simpson believes these issues will be solved over time, the technology at this stage, he says, is still very much in development”. Autonomous Cars will definitely face issues at first just like early automobiles did. But as time goes on and as the technology improves these kinks will be worked out. You never know with the Technology running these cars just like cars now engines and parts fail. For all people know these cars could be far less reliable than current human driven cars. It is unknown how these cars will handle situations such as bad weather and traffic situations such as delays and emergency situations. Eventually the technology will be figured out and this will possibly not be a problem. But there still has to be skepticism about if the Autonomous Technology is going to fail in these situations and put people’s safety in question.
Those who believe autonomous cars are not ready for the road believe the intelligent cars won’t be able to share the road with human drivers and make decisions in traffic with the possibility of technological failure or human error possible at any time on the road. “Google’s current self-driving cars have been in accidents caused by cars driven by humans. With 25 prototypes on public streets as of last month, it's continuously trying to improve safety.”
Autonomous Cars and regular human driven cars will most definitely have problems coexisting on the road. The Autonomous cars technology systems are unproven in traffic with human drivers, and human errors tend to happen very abruptly. It is unknown how well the Autonomous cars will be able to read react to abrupt lane changes and the possibility of cars hydroplaning, spinning out or even abruptly braking. This could lead to conflicts between the two different types of cars and possibility safety issues as well.
Modern cars have been the norm for so long that Autonomous cars are soon to take over that position and become what is featured on the showroom floors due to the superiority of the technology of the car. Autonomous cars are the future of transportation. It will save money for the economy, make the roads safer, make traffic more efficient, and allow the disabled to travel just like regular drivers. People will be able to get things done during their commutes due to the car driving for you. The possibility of driver error will be eliminated from the roads and this will hopefully lower traffic collisions an immense amount compared to what it is at now. If autonomous cars are brought to roads, it will truly revolutionize our world and will have a very strong effect on society.
