the lies of two protagonists named: George and Lennie. People that have less money or whom cannot afford pleasurable goods than most people often wish to achieve more because they want to be like everyone else having the same or more possessions as people starting off with. As George and Lennie are further into their journey, they feel like they can achieve their dream with the most confidence even though they have nothing to start with, they then build the confidence and courage to go and search for jobs by watching other people around them live comfortably while they have been struggling during the time. It is normal in human nature for people to see others with better, more, or new belongings which makes the normal human to be jealous of one another, which proves that anyone with less always wish and dream to achieve a status that is just as equal or more superiority over another.
During the Great Depression, having hope was a privilege due to all the lost hope from the stock market crash. Steinbeck shows an example of hope between George and Lennie by showing their lifelong dream through the rough times. In addition to Steinbeck’s examples he quotes in the book where George says, “Someday-we’re gonna get the jack together and we’re gonna have a little house and a couple of acres an’ a cow and some pigs-” (Steinbeck 15). Even though they are not certain they can achieve such dream, George and Lennie both try their hardest to achieve and pursue it which comes to prove that if you set your mind to what you want the most, then you will achieve whatever you would want because determination sets the brain to a drive where it won’t stop until the task is concluded with the intended results. As they were chased out from their town, their dream had yet only become more realistic. Both George and Lennie ran together in search of a job, so they can earn some money for the land they both wish to buy. For example, Steinbeck gives us a quick hint and glimpse of what was to come in the future by setting a dialogue between George and Lennie to show that they will get the job they were looking for all along, “An’ you ain’t gonna do bad things like you done in Weed, neither,” “Run us to hell... We run. They was lookin’ for us, but they didn’t catch us” (Steinbeck 8). Hope can be a powerful tool because it sets your mind to something positive rather than negative. Having hope can build your drive and dedication to what you want or wish to have in life, and plays a significant role in wanting to compete with others to be better than each other. Steinbeck is trying to say that if you wish to dream big then go for it even though it might seem impossible because no matter what, hope will always be there to guide. Eventually after the Great Depression many people who had nothing before ended up with fortunes as the economy came back to normal. Many unemployed and homeless eventually were employed and had homes to live in. The Great Depression left and indelible impression on not only stock market traders, but to authors and common people alike.
