The human experience of belonging is an eternal struggle to find our place amidst a paradox, where the acquisition of material symbols of superiority disconnects and disempowers individuals’ sense of belonging. The poems of Peter Skrzynecki, ‘Ancestors’ and ‘Feliks Skrzynecki’ along with Milos Forman’s film, ‘One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest’ and YouTube clip ‘Symphony of science’, recognize how the passing of time in any advanced civilization includes the formation of organizing institutions that restrict individualism and camouflage the fundamental truth of belonging to one another and to the Earth atomically.…

My approach to writing my letter was very different than my approach to a writing a typical research essay. Instead of appealing to a professor, I was appealing to someone on more of an emotional level instead of an intellectual level. Although I discussed some facts in my letter, I did not go into nearly as much depth as I would in an essay. I also was trying to ask for something in my letter, where in an essay, I am trying to give the reader information not gain information from the reader. I felt more comfortable writing my letter because it was more like a typical conversation or an email. I could have more freedom with what I say and not have to follow as strict of guidelines. The letter felt more like me because it was all from my own brain and not mainly research that I had collected. I will use my experience with writing this letter to benefit future letters because I know a good structure for a letter that I can use for future letters. I also know how to incorporate all three aspects of rhetoric so it is more likely for me to get a response.…

An individual is significantly influenced by their surrounding when striving to achieve a sense of belonging with others and oneself. Individual’s identity is solely shaped from how they belong in the world, differentiating us from everyone else. An individual’s interaction with people, society, and community and their response will determine if we’re able to develop a sense of belonging or not. They may choose to reject and challenge our behavior; character, values and beliefs making us feel excluded. But only when these features are accepted and recognized we’re able to gain a sense of belonging. This concept of external forces affecting an individual’s sense of belonging is explored in Peter Skrzynecki’s poems ‘St Patrick’s College’ and ‘In the folk Museum". These are the poems from the Immigrant Chronicles which are a collection of Peter’s and his family’s migrant experiences and their endeavor to gain a sense of acceptance and belonging in their new country. This is a similar situation reconnoitered in the graphic novel The Arrival by Shaun Tan, where the author captures every move and thought of the migrant who strives to fit in into the new environment and people.…

It is a well-known fact that belonging to a group can make an individual feel not only accepted, but more powerful that if they were on their own. Whether it is a community, youth group or even religion, belonging is an everyday occurrence of like that many of us do not even realise. Belonging to a group is more influential than belonging to an individual. We can see this in the texts The Crucible by Arthur Miller, 1984 by George Orwell and the listening task. As individual’s we are not limited to just singularly enriching or challenging a community of group. Our role is not definitive; there is not a concrete set of parameters that must be adhered to, thus, our impact on a community or group is multi-layered. Individually we all have an ability to govern our contribution and influence on a community or group, which is determined by the way in which we perceive, and more importantly, act upon our personal views of a communities or groups’ systems, values and principles. Ultimately, every individual has the capacity to synonymously enrich and challenge a community or group. Moreover, they do not have to challenge a group per se, but can accompany this challenging of conformity with enriching the community, making it better off and richer and adding value to it from their involvement. Shakespeare’s ‘As You Like It,’ Jim Loach’s ‘Oranges and Sunshine’ and Armin Greder’s ‘The Island’ convey how individuals have this potential and choose to act accordingly due to personal beliefs, morals, consequences or even unknowingly.…
