Reflective Essay: My Approach To Writing My Letter
My approach to writing my letter was very different than my approach to a writing a typical research essay. Instead of appealing to a professor, I was appealing to someone on more of an emotional level instead of an intellectual level. Although I discussed some facts in my letter, I did not go into nearly as much depth as I would in an essay. I also was trying to ask for something in my letter, where in an essay, I am trying to give the reader information not gain information from the reader. I felt more comfortable writing my letter because it was more like a typical conversation or an email. I could have more freedom with what I say and not have to follow as strict of guidelines. The letter felt more like me because it was all from my own brain and not mainly research that I had collected. I will use my experience with writing this letter to benefit future letters because I know a good structure for a letter that I can use for future letters. I also know how to incorporate all three aspects of rhetoric so it is more likely for me to get a response.

I also used logos when referring to Jillian Michael’s talents and her past success when it came to motivating people to live a healthy lifestyle. I used pathos by appealing to her emotional side of caring deeply about people’s health. I also used pathos by reaching out to the fact that she herself is a healthy person and has an emotional attachment to being fit and living a healthy lifestyle. I demonstrated my commitment to this issue by showing that I have done extensive research on the topic. I also have given up HFCS myself to show that I truly believe it should be eliminated from ones diet. By wanting to encourage others to stop buying products with HFCS, I am showing that I think everyone should be committed to not consuming it and not just

In order to become accepted into any academic establishment, one must endure competition against other students. For several students, their acceptance could rely solely on a recommendation letter from a trusted supervisor. Kurt Olson, an AP Language and Composition instructor, effectively composed a letter for his former student and Teacher’s Assistant, Green Choi. With the intention of creating an effective letter of recommendation, Olson strategically structures the rhetoric of the letter by first appealing logic, followed by establishing credibility, and concluding with appeals to emotion. By utilizing the appeals in this specific order, the content of the letter is enhanced and impactful for the reader.…

Next I need to organize my ideas to explain how I arrived at my thesis. Finally, I need to proofread my writing to omit any grammar or writing mistakes. I have learned that revising your writing makes it way better than before. You find your mistakes and realize you can replace words such as “bring to” to a different high vocabulary word such as “cease”. I know now that there is no way to make your paper perfect. There will always be a word, words, or sentence you could change. In addition, I’ve gained a better understanding on passive and active sentences. Once I was done writing my paper, and began to reread it I found some passive sentences. All I did was revise the sentence which helped my writing flow better. Initially, I read the first paper I wrote for the Quarter 1 Writing Assessment and I noticed that I didn’t follow the directions completely. As I read on, there were many simple sentences and not many transitional words.…

When one masters a certain practice, one becomes confident and nearly perfects the practice either because one had guidance or practiced continuously. I have not put myself in either one of those situations. To be honest, I write ‘put myself’ because I believe I had the choice of removing myself from classrooms to another better one; and the choice of being able to discipline myself to practice writing continuously.…

Throughout this semester I have received a lot of input and criticism on my essays from my TA, my professor and fellow students. This semester I was fortunate to receive quick, fairly reliable, built in feedback. From the feedback that I have received by taking this class I believe that I have become a better writer as it was beneficial for the most part. Feedback that I received from my fellow students was occasionally helpful. It typically varied from week to week. One week I would write a paper and get a ton of markings and criticism on it which was helpful because I was able to see what I did wrong and I would rarely have to get it proof read another time. Other times I would turn in a paper and it would come back with few markings and comments. This felt almost like a waste of time because I knew that I had more mistakes that I did not catch earlier. Because of this I would have to go out of my way and someone else would have to go out of their way to get it proof read again, or I would risk handing in the good copy with mistakes. One thing that I appreciated from peer evaluation days was that was able to see what worked in my paper, what did not and what I need to improve on.…

Over the course of this year in English, I think my writing process has excelled the most along with my overall writing. In the past, I have used similar techniques to develop a final essay, but, this year, I have begin to rely more heavily on planning out and slowly chipping away at my essays and papers. I believe also that because of this planning the strength of my writing as a whole has grown. Personally, I do not think that I grew in my vocabulary usage. Overall this year, I grew as a writer in ways that I would not have predicted.…

In school, we have been required to write many papers on many different subjects, some being timed and others not. Writing has never been something that has come easy to me, especially when put on the spot and told to write a paper in a certain amount of hours. When I write, I like to have time to think and plan my essay. Being able to revise and edit the paper makes it even better than it was before. When I am given the time to plan my essay, the writing has more depth than when I am put on the spot and have no time to think about what will go into my paper.…
