Generalized Anxiety Disorder
Abstract
Generalized anxiety disorder is a paralyzing mental disorder that causes an individual to be plagued with a constant and overwhelming sense of anxiety from any number of sources throughout their daily experiences. This anxiety is crippling because it affects the individual’s ability to function in daily tasks. This case study focuses on Rachel, a 22-year old college senior with a long history of reoccurring anxiety and debilitating symptoms that affect her daily functioning at school, work, and in her personal relationships.

She began to worry and rethink every moment of the last three years wondering what she could or should have done differently. She began going out with large groups of her friends to take her mind off the breakup and in hopes of meeting someone new but, since crowds and meeting new people made her very anxious, she began to drink to relieve the anxiety that accompanied these outings. It got to the point where the more she continued to go out the more heavily and often she drank. As her drinking increased, she felt the effects when trying to concentrate in class while hung-over from the night before, and as her performance suffered her anxiety increased. This type of circular cause-and-effect continued for months as Rachel attempted to cope with her increasing
