She buried her head into Jem’s side. Mr. Avery was finally out, but he took a tumble. I’m sure everyone will be hearing about that for awhile. The house darn right looks like a pumpkin, all orange flames. There ain’t gonna be nothing but a darned pit there after everything. Is that Scout shaking? She must’ve been so darn cold in just her night-clothes and a coat. I sliped out the door and tip-toed across the porch. I oh so gently sliped the blanket over her shoulders. My kids, right here. I could just hug em, but I don’t. I creeped my way back into the house unnoticed. Just in time too, cause another coughin’ fit came on. I settled back into my spot and gazed at our neighbors. Even in the dead of the night, a freezing night that is, they came out to help Miss Maudie. Plenty more firetrucks showed up and began pumping water onto a different house. . .is that the Finch house?! I glanced at the kids and saw their muscles tighten and they moved closer together. I guess I hadn’t thought what would happen if another house caught on fire. Scout looked darn right ready to break down when their snowman melted. They’d been workin’ in pajama tops and nightshirts stuffed into their pants. Scout musta finally realized she was freezin’ cause she started to do a lil’ jig. She stopped when another fire truck showed up though. There wasn’t another fire hydrants so they soaked the Crawford house in fire extinguishers. Maudie’s tin roof quelled the flames. The house roared with one final fight and collapsed. Fire gushed everywhere and a flurry of blankets followed. Men usin’ em to beat out the sparks. ‘Twas finally dawn when is felt okay to leave my spot. Men had began to leave and the children went to Miss Maudie who was starin’ at the smokin’ black hole where her house used to be. Wonder what she gonna do now that she ain’t got no house. Maybe she will stay with the Finch’s. I let myself slip into a deep sleep, dreamin’ bout the better
