street from Ford’s Theatre. John Wilkes Booth was tracked down twelve days later by Union soldiers and shot. James Garfield was the next assassinated president. Garfield was shot on July 2, 1881 while walking through the Baltimore and Potomac Railroad Station in Washington, DC. Garfield was shot from behind by a man named James Guiteau. Guiteau believed Garfield owed him a position in the diplomatic corps and was angry when he did not receive one. Guiteau also thought Garfield would ruin the Republican Party, therefore Guiteau took it upon himself to assassinate James Garfield. James Garfield died on September 18, 1881 because the bullet could not be located inside his body and an infection developed. James Guiteau was convicted of murder and hung on June 30, 1882. William McKinley was assassinated on September 6, 1901 at the Pan-American Exposition in Buffalo, New York.
McKinley was shot by Leon Czolgosz, an architect who believed McKinley was the symbol of oppression. Czolgosz felt it was his responsibility as an architect to assassinate McKinley in order to help the country. Czolgosz shot McKinley at close range while McKinley was greeting the public at the Exposition. McKinley died on September 14, 1901 due to gangrene. Czolgosz was found guilty and sentenced to death in the electric chair. John F. Kennedy is the most recently assassinated president in American history. Kennedy was assassinated on November 22, 1963 outside the Dealey Plaza in Dallas, Texas. Kennedy was shot from long range while he was riding through the streets of downtown Dallas in a motorcade. Upon being shot, Kennedy was rushed to Parkland Memorial Hospital and died shortly thereafter. Lee Harvey Oswald, the assassinator, was shot and killed by Jack Ruby before Oswald received a trial. As a result many conspiracy theories have developed as to who was involved in the assassination and
why. The assassinations of these presidents have created a drastic change in the way our government protects the president. When Abraham Lincoln was assassinated, he had one man guarding him. Now, our government has a large group of people, known as the Secret Service, to guard the president throughout his life. It is because of these events in our history that our country has had to adapt to the world today.
