Puck is the middle child to both of her brothers, one of whom is planning to move away. In an effort to delay his departure, Puck enters herself in a dangerous, mythical water horse race. Puck, being the first girl ever to even enter in this race receives a lot of discouragement from people around her island. Even when no one believed in her, Puck still advances in training with Dove ( her non-water horse). Over the course of training, Puck meets a boy named Sean Kendrick. Sean is considered the water horse whisperer and he won the upcoming race 4 times, at first they both despise each other but as they started spending more time together, their relationship grows. As the race starts to become imminent, Puck learns that her brothers and her were in debt because no one had payed the house bill for the last year or so. Puck now really needs to win the race so she can also win the cash prize to help her with the financial crisis. She trains vigorously everyday and finally it became race day. After being refused the traditional colors for the race, Puck gets in line to race. Eventually with great difficulty, Puck wins the race and the cash.
