What can human resources (HR) do to ensure employees are competitive in the 21st century business world? The key to ensure employees are competitive in the 21st century is Human Resources Development among others aspect as Recruiting and Retention excellent packages. To attract and keep the best and the brightest, HR will have to offer employees opportunities for educational and vocational development that address their needs to remain relevant and aggressive in pursuing their career goals. Evaluate the employees to identify any gaps in the abilities they bring to the position once know what each position requires. Develop clear and consistent career paths. Identify the progression from entry level to executive level positions by making clear connections between the training and experience they require for success.
Obtain an understanding of the requirements of each job and you will easily make these connections allowing you to design educational opportunities. Design a program of educational and development opportunities to keep your employees competitive within their respective career fields. Include corporate developed training opportunities, externally sourced training, such as seminars, in-services, or lecture series, and formal educational options such as tuition reimbursement or supplemental, non-degree-seeking education programs. Offer and encourage cross training opportunities that expose employees to the interdependent positions to which their jobs relate. Devise formal succession plans for critical positions. Maintain a relevant plan of succession for each position in which a temporary vacancy would create a slowdown in productivity. Ensure that a succession plan is developed for all managerial positions from the executive to the supervisory level. How has HR’s role changed over the past few years?
The role of HR has changed particularly since the introduction of the computer and the use of the Web. Many companies have their staff around the world and keep communication through the Internet. Others have outsourcing their human resources activities as a mean to control expenditure and be more competitive in their markets. Human resources have evolved over the past ten years in that there have been many new methods introduced to deal with inter-office relations. Shifting from the antiquated “personnel” department to “human resources” has in and of itself transformed the way that companies see the human element. Counseling has become a very viable method that is used to calm and correct the behavior of those who are not performing up to expectations or are exhibiting bad behavior. Other methods involve using psychological methods which have proven to be extremely useful in a number of occasions and which companies have found to be useful in business situations. Human resource departments have proven themselves to be a very vital and necessary part of businesses. Technology has played a significant role in this transformation. Training has evolved from classroom based, teacher led training to online options. Today 's businesses are looking for quick hits in training verses the day or week long training of the
past.
