Hrm 531 Week 4 Operations Management Paper
Operations Management The first problem I noticed with the highland Financial Services is, the Manager. Why did it have to take him up till two years to look back and realize there was a problem with the pattern of demand of their services from the previous years? Looking at the chart presented, the problem with Highline Financial services is that the demand for their services is very inconsistent in some quarters. The demand for services begins with good numbers in the first quarter and then drops in second quarter. In the third quarter, demand rises tremendously and then drops again in the fourth quarter. There is a little more growth in the second year with the number of demands but it has similar patterns in all four quarters as the previous year. Furthermore the first and third quarters for each season receive higher demands. While both charts illustrate that demand is highest during the third quarter. Moreover, I noticed that the demand for service B in year 2 dropped compared to the previous year. …show more content…
Did the organization plan on enough capacity to match expected demand within the organization and supply chain? If so, was it cost effective? After everything is said and done main problem I see is the demand for services keeps swinging back and forth at a steady pace and it is demonstrated with the number of demands per quarter. With this trend I can come to a conclusion that, demand will increase every year at a steady rate. Although demand will grow at a steady rate yearly, the services will still suffer from up and down fluctuations in the demand per quarter. This is because the services they offer are seasonal or they just have a peak period (third quarter) in which demand is at its highest. This is common in most organizations. An example of an estimate in demand using the judgmental forecasts is:
Year

Lumpkin Plumbing’s demand is slightly seasonal, with an increase in sales during the spring and early summer. Based on the company’s projections, even they were not expecting the high increase of sales. While the projected a sales growth was 20%, the actual growth rate was 63.1%. This increase proves that there was higher demand for Lumpkin Plumbing’s business. Perhaps with the newly added display areas, retail sales will increase the net sales even more. This could give the business a competitive advantage in the future. One of the biggest issues I have with this company is the inaccuracy of its projections; especially for the inventory and accounts payable. Inventory from 1998 to 1999 increased by 18.74%; however, the projection for 2000 is only for a 10.5% increase. If they are expanding to accommodate growth then I think the growth rate for inventory should have been higher.…

Freedie Mack will need to use moving average date technique. This technique that averages a number of recent values, updated as new values become available (Stevenson, 2012 p. 84). Freedie must use the following equation. Ft=Man= n E i-t At-i/n= At-n…+At-z+At-1/n. By taking amounts from each quarter in the corresponding service areas and dividing the values, Freedie will get the percent’s of growth. The example would be from year one, quarter one, service A and year two using service A quarter one (60/72=1.2% growth projection and then taking the 1.2% and multiplying this by 72). This would give the organization an 86 in service column A for year three, quarter one and so on for each quarter as we will see in the table below. Freedie would use this date to determine the growth or fall regarding the demand. He can use this to predict several years in the future using this technique. Using this technique is easy and easy to understand (Stevenson 2012, p.85).…
