Hinggalah tahun 1955 iaitu apabila pilihanraya Persekutuan/umum diadakan, politik Tanah Melayu mengalami perubahan drastik ekoran

    Peran Parpol Dlm Demokrasi

Kondisi keparpolan di Indonesia seperti ini, juga diungkapkan oleh Grayson Lloyd dan Shannon Smith: …..most of the major parties are not, to quote the 1999 statute, ‘in the hand of the people’ but rather are controlled by small numbers of elites, both at the national and local levels. Major parties tend to have poor internal communications: branches generally receive scant information about policy issues or…

The termination of the Malayan Union in 1948 made the British to commit themselves to prepare the way for the federation’s independence. The first problem is managing the perceptions of different racial groups. There is a need to manage this problem as preconceived notions of biased treatment by the government against any racial group could lead to the outbreak of violence among the different communities. For example, in 1964, Singapore experienced race riots which resulted in 36 dead and 590 injured. Singapore was in Malaysia then, and the UMNO felt threatened when the PAP participated in the 1964 Federal elections. The UMNO then led an anti-PAP campaign in the medium using the Utusan Melayu, claiming that PAP’s rule disadvantaged the Malays and that Malay Singaporeans remained poor under PAP’s rule. They also claimed that PAP was uprooting Malay families in resettlement projects. Some UMNO extremists even came to Singapore and made fiery speeches that angered many Singaporean Malays. In July 1964, during the celebration of Prophet Muhammad’s birthday, a clash between a Chinese policeman and a group of Malay participants turned into a full-blown race riot over the next few days. This shows how the perceptions of unequal treatment towards the different races can cause suspicions, distrust and even hostility among Singaporeans, even if these perceptions are not based on facts. Therefore, this problem must be managed to prevent any outbreak of violence among citizens.…

CHANDRA MUZAFFAR IT was 20 months ago that Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak formally announced his 1Malaysia concept. We are now in a position to examine the challenges facing the idea, to reflect upon its achievements and to look ahead. The first of the challenges comes from vested interests with a stake in perpetuating ethnic dichotomies that are inimical to national unity. Among the Malays and Bumiputeras, there are groups who abuse the Special Position embodied in the Constitution and in certain public policies to advance their own interests. They alienate not only the vast majority of non-Malays but also a significant segment of the Malay and Bumiputera populace. Likewise, the pronounced push for Chinese primary and secondary education within the Chinese community, in contrast to its passive approach to education in the national language, has created a great deal of disillusionment among Malays who feel that the former are not inclined towards integration that acknowledges the identity of the land.…

The Japanese surrendered after the World War 11 which gave MPAJA (Malaysian People’s Anti Japanese Army) a brief chance to rule the country. This party, mostly consisting of the Chinese, took advantage of their position to torture Malays and Japanese alike for the brutality with which they had been treated during the Japanese Occupation era. This further caused a racial division in Malaysia that exists until today. Even though this lasted only two weeks, before the British Military Administration took over, even today the impact of the brief MPAJA rule is painful and lasting.…

Basically, during the time of war, the British we looked upon as the supreme ruler because they seemed to be untouchable. However, when the Japanese came into the picture and defeated them, it showed the people of Malaya that the British were not the strongest power in the world.. This brought upon the foundation of nationalism in the hearts of the people. People began to question the rights of the British to rule upon us anymore. The locals were now aware of the weaknesses in British rule. British had been challenged and defeated by an Asian power(Japan) and this gave the locals even more confidence. The Japanese occupation brought about the political awareness to the local populace and made them want to achieve independence. This was caused by the Japanese propaganda slogan, “Asia for Asians”. The Malays were also given many chances to experience being in administrative posts and they were now confident they could rule their own country. This made them aware that they were the rightful owners and citizens of Malaya. The Malays then became eager to protect their rights and govern the country for themselves. The mistreating of locals added more fuel in building the spirit of nationalism amongst the local populace.…
