Human Nature Essay

What drives us to do the things we do as humans. This ranges from the way we act to separate our selves from others to our undying need for self-recognition. We do many things that we know are wrong but this knowledge is overpowered by our need for individuality and our acts of deviance contribute to our character and are just a part of our human nature. Many things play a part in the overall theme of human nature ranging from individuality and deviance all the way to believing what we are told to be the truth by other humans. Individuality plays a critical role in human nature. We as people always try to do things that separate us from others. We receive significant gratification when were told we are the best of best at something as well as when we do something more impressive then just one other person. As much as we don’t like to admit we always strive to be better then everyone else at everything we do. Sometimes we even make up stories to lead others to believe that we are better then we truly are. For example, in Coffee and Cigarettes there is a sketch in which a musician tries to play himself off as a doctor who just preformed a tracheostomy on the side of a road in order to save a mans life (Director: Jim Jarmusch, 2003). This was right after his friend questioned his relevance and talent, which caused him to respond with a lie to make himself seem greater and of more importance to the world. He had to make up a lie in order to momentarily gain self-esteem and seem “cooler” in front of his friend. However his friend picked up on the lie but didn’t say anything in order to not be mean and socially acceptable. The way we act in order to get attention and make our selves’ feel of greater value is also an important characteristic of human nature. We all lash out whether it’s to gain attention or to seem dominant. Every time we lash out we try to find excuses in order to seem cool talking back but also not

Meaning is a symbolically-charged idea - it is an idea that is embodied and conveyed by a certain representation, a symbol, whether these symbols are objects or words. Meaning therefore gives sense and significance to ‘things’ that would otherwise be absurd of nature. This leads us to reflect on the power of meaning as a determinant that shapes our visions, beliefs, perceptions and so on. This is why we can speak of the power of literature when meaning is conveyed through words.…

Ruth dreamed to be wealthy and have a happy family and Walter dreamed one day to be the owner of a business and become a "real man". It is these dreams that serve to explain the personality of the characters, provide a meaningful context for the development and decline of conflicts between them, and help the readers either admire or revile them.…

The human condition is a term which references our complicated existence by highlighting our ongoing ability to adapt and change both our perceptions and values. Through our mental capabilities of both creativity and imagination, humanity is able to achieve a sense of both self-actualisation and liberation, resulting in them acting as the core of our existence where, without them we would become susceptible to the overwhelming flaws of the human condition. Evidencing this are the three texts, ‘Dejection: an Ode’, ‘This Lime Tree Bower my Prison’ and ‘Focus’, which…

In addition to my Capstone essay on humanism, I will cast out my ideas on humanism through the use of photography as well. Photography has long been a passion of mine and is the best way for me to express how I feel and what I see about humanity through my photos. I began learning about photography and using my first camera in middle school and have since then used photos for projects, fun, and for my very own portfolio website and Instagram I have created. Although I mostly like to photograph animals or nature, photographing people is a new experience that I still work on to conquer to the composition aspect of it.…

Humanism believes people have free will and that they desire to make themselves and the world a better place. Humanists believe behaviourism reduces people to mere numbers and is too scientific to understand the complexity of the human mind. Humanism prefers research methods such as unstructured interviews, diaries and journal entries as they allow greater access to the mind. Behaviourism believes people’s behaviour is driven by their environment. This means they believe human behaviour can be explained using scientific methods to measure and analyse behaviour. Behaviourism also suggests behaviour is hard to change once you reach adulthood as your behaviour and personality are based on your early childhood experiences. (Glassman & Hadad,…

The human mind is very complex and mysterious. The human mind is a topic that is very common throughout history and also found in poems. In the two poems that show this topic is: "One need not to be a chamber-to be haunted" by Emily Dickinson and "The Haunted Palace" by Edgar Allan Poe. These two poems share similarities and also differences. The similarities are more apparent and more essential than the differences. Similarities within these poems include the use of a house as a metaphor for the human mind and the human body; the fact that they all try to explore the evil or dark side of human life. Also, another similarity present in both poems is the author's tone and style of writing. The differences between the poems are the different rhyming schemes, and plot.…

Human Nature: good, evil, or neutral. All ideas could be firmly argued, but I think the essence of humanity is at its core evil. “Surely there is not a righteous man on Earth who does good and never sins” – Ecclesiastes 7:20. This verse from the Bible merely states that every being on this Earth sins; it is our nature. In my opinion, sinning is what makes us human. Hsun Tzu believed that rules and regulations were necessary to keep humans in check, and I absolutely agree. Think about it, without rules, everything would be totally chaotic. Although I think human nature is inherently evil, I don’t fully disagree with the other philosophers. There is some good in humanity. I personally believe that the concepts of good and bad are co-requisite (meaning there cannot be one without the other).…
