address their city’s welfare problems. “Frances Wisebart Jacobs, the Rev. Myron W. Reed, Msgr. William J.O’Ryan, Dean H. Martyn Hart and Rabbi William S. Friedman put their heads together to plan the first united campaign for 10 health and welfare agencies” ("United Live", 2011). Together they brought about an organization to act as an instrument to gather funds for local charities, as well as to generate relief services, guide and direct clients to cooperating agencies. The united way also made it possible to create emergency assistance grants for those in need. “That year, Denver raised $21,700, created a movement that would spread throughout the country to become the United Way. Over 118 years later, United Way is still focused on mobilizing the caring power of communities and making a difference in people’s lives” ("United Live", 2011).
The organization’s mission: “United Way improves lives by mobilizing the caring power of communities around the world to advance the common good” ("United Live", 2011). Their vision is to produce a world where every human being can achieve their individual potential through proper education, having a stable income and living a healthy life. In 2008, the United Way set forth a program designed to accomplish goals such as, improve education, finical stability and promote a healthy living, within 10 years.
“Volunteers, representing all segments of the community, govern United Way through its Board of Trustees and committees” ("United Way Fact Sheet", n.d). Through strategic planning volunteers are able to plan and perform an annual fund-raising campaign. Nevertheless, study of local human services needs, volunteers plan and perform the annual fund-raising campaign, establish the main concern of needs in the community, and assess agency programs and services in order to assign contributions in a reasonable and effective manner.
“The members of the United Way board and committees are dedicated citizens, many of them with years of experience in serving the community” ("United Way Fact Sheet", n.d). The United Way consists of World Wide Board of Directors, U.S.A Board of Trusties and a Leadership Team.
There are many different purposes for each role within the agency— Staff and Board of Directors.
“In order to be the most effective, we have found that being focused, concentrated and dedicated to a small number of tasks gives us the most impact on the jobs that you are doing” ("United Way Give. community.
The National Football League (NFL) and United Way have joined together for more than 35 years, jointly they work to improve communities all over the United States.
“Most recently, the partnership is working to raise awareness about the issue of childhood obesity and creating new opportunities for young people to lead healthier lifestyles. It’s part of United Way’s 2018 goal to increase by one third the number of healthy lives.” ("United Live", 2011). Another key stake holder is The United Way Global Corporate Leadership (GCL) plan. This program leverages the obligation and thoughtful power of national and global corporations with United Way 's aptitude to develop lives and generate lasting adjustments in society across the country. Collaborating with United Way offers corporations a way to invest strategically in their communities. “United Way and organized labor work together to train union members to assist co-workers and their families with information about available local services and to refer them to the appropriate organizations” ("United Live", 2011).
Some Community collaborations, marketing and public relations strategies United Way uses are benefits, campaign, fundraisers, pledges, donations, build playgrounds and volunteer mentors. Located on the United Way’s website, is a list of different activities hosted by United Way. This is a great marketing tool. Different vendor fairs make it possible to inform their community about United Way, the importance of it and how
one is able to volunteer or donate.
Environmental trends United Way is facing, are issues of governance, accountability and performance in the nonprofit sector. Brian Gallagher, President of United Way of America, was “hired to change the organization’s mission—to get United Way to focus on work that would show results” ("United Live", 2011). Disturbing world events intercede such as the attacks on 9-11 and the response of the charitable community to that event and the corporate scandals at Enron, WorldCom, and Tyco gave nonprofit organizations a bad name. Brian Gallagher made changes to the way united way works and took necessary steps to regain trust.
In conclusion, the United Way organization helps millions of people all over the United States. Through generous donations and strategic event planning United Way is able to improve lives by mobilizing the caring power of communities around the world to advance the common good. The paper covered the organization’s mission and vision, how the organization governs itself, the various roles in the organization, who the key stake holders are in the organization, what community collaborations and marketing tools are used, and what environmental trends the organization is facing.
