Humans Hurting Animal Species The extinction of animals in the world is a problem that is increasing. Every year, thousands of animals die. Many things that humans do are causing these extinctions and that is something we must avoid. There are three things that people do that hurt animals such as destroying their habitats; using their skin for human benefits and contaminating their environment. The destruction of natural habitat is one of the main threats faced by most of the animals’ species in the world. This is done as large projects, such as dams and waterways that are man-built. Another reason is the clearing of forests and forest fires. Humans excessively deforest areas where animals live because they need timber for financial gain. Forest fires cause animals to move to strange areas, where they are exposed to many dangers. Subsequently, the clearing of areas to build new houses, roads, buildings, businesses or plantations causes the animal population to decrease. For example, in India, large areas of natural habitats are destroyed for tea plantations. The …show more content…
natural habitat of elephants is being cleaned; therefore, they are not able to find the amount of food they need to survive each day. As a result, many of the elephants die due to hunger. Another reason is that people use animals or their parts for their personal benefit, such as sport and commercial hunting.
Many animals have been hunted for their body parts as trophies. Furthermore, people also use animal skins for clothing, shoes, belts, handbags, purses and coats. In addition, many exotic animals are sold on the black market for their commercial value as hundreds of species such as mammals, reptiles, amphibians, fish, birds, butterflies, etc. According to the website USA Today, “wildlife crime has grown into the fourth-largest branch of illegal international trade in the past half-decade.” People also capture and confine numerous animals in zoos, circuses or aquariums which they use for their benefit and enjoyment of humans, as animals are forced to do things contrary to their nature. For example, a lion would never jump through a hoop that is on
fire. The contamination of natural environments is another problem that harms animal species. Some methods such as the introduction of nutrients and sediment from humans cause pain, suffering and death to animals constantly. Likewise, garbage dumps and oil spills cause high mortality of waterfowls, fish and other animals living in the oceans. Moreover, many animals die by chemical and toxic buildup resulting from industrial processes because the water they drink or the air they breathe contain high doses of pesticides and other chemical by-products. For example, more elephants are being illegally killed because people want their ivory and tusks, which then are sold at high prices, making this activity very profitable. As we have seen, some of the ways humans cause the death of animals are: damaging their natural habitats, killing them for personal use, and destroying their environment. These can all be prevented; all humans must understand that they can stop doing things that cause other animals to die and must work together to prevent animal extinction and help them survive.
