The True Purpose of Humble Living
When thinking of living simply, what comes to mind? For many, it could be a studio apartment, still filled with the classic amenities of life. For others, they may think of a quaint home off the grid. Would a dumpster ever come to mind, though? Probably not – after all, who would want to live in a literal garbage dump? What would the benefits of that humble living be? That question is explained through James Hamblin's "Living Simply in a Dumpster,” an article out of The Norton Field Guide to Writing. Hamblin explains how living simply and humbly can improve both the environment and the lives of those who choose to downsize.

I agree that downsizing can be extremely beneficial for a person and the world around them. When the average person looks around their own home, they likely find many things that they have obtained simply because they want them, not because they need them. If they were to live without those things, they would not necessarily have a lower quality of life. In fact, the person may be surprised at how stress-free they feel even after a simple downsize. I found this to be true when I went through my closet recently. By getting rid of the clothes and things I did not need anymore, I felt like I was less cluttered and more …show more content…
Whether it’s something major, like an entire home, or even with the amount a person consumes in clothes or other goods, everyone can have a positive impact, like Wilson did. Downsizing may even lead to some making new friends or trying new things. No matter where they live, residents can better familiarize themselves with the city they live in, the people around them, and their impact on the ecosystem. Downsizing may even positively impact the overall quality of daily life. Even though we may not know how the world would react to that big of a change now, it will be interesting to see how future generations will take this experiment and use it to positively impact the world in years to
