A Humble Servant
A HUMBLE SERVANT
Introduction: Read Philippians 2:1-8
Begin by emphasizing verse 8
Paul grapples with teaching an attitude that should be the standard or the MO of the church.
What is Culture? Culture is a complex system of behavior, values, beliefs, traditions and artifacts, which is transmitted through generations.

The church as well has a culture and we are not talking about race or ethnicity…
So what should the culture of the church ought to be? Humility “esteeming one another above yourselves…”
What would happen if that would be the culture that defines us as the true church of the living God?

What is Humility? a. Preferring others above yourself b. Who can I serve today? c. You can be humble without having low-self esteem (It is a fact that most people with low self-esteem try to hide it with arrogance pompous behavior, snobbish attitude to simply cover up their insecurities and vulnerabilities) d. You have to be strong to be humble… it is not your exterior behavior that defines you… you have to be secure to be humble… which means you do not go around pouting that no one gives attention to you….

Last week God spoke to us that if we are going to go after Him we must take up our “cross” (broom)…. In other words, He expects us to be slaves unto Him. That is what we are: Slaves of the Most High God and as such we ought to develop a culture of humility within the strength of the Spirit of God “who causes us to wil and to act in order to fulfill his good purpose.” Phil. 2:13
The problem is that we do not understand or we are reluctant to see the picture given to us by God Himself how the night before He was to be betrayed he stood up and girded his waist with a towel and then he stooped to wash smelly, dusty, calloused rough feet…. A ritual reserved only for the slave Phil. 2:9-11 READ

No wonder Paul would say to Timothy: 2 Timothy 1:8 So do not be ashamed of the testimony about our Lord or of me his prisoner. Rather,

Through metaphors and similes used in Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God, the speaker, Jonathan Edwards, convinces the reader of the power of their sins. The powerful figurative language used by Edwards helped to convey the terror of God’s wrath on those who do not fully devote themselves to their faith. One of the greatest images in this passage is the idea that one’s good deeds are like a spider’s web, delicate and fragile. In contrast, the sinful transgressions of a being equate to the falling rock on an unequivocal path towards the spider’s web. This depiction clearly indicates that the power of one’s good deeds have no effect on the power of one’s sins. The use of a spider’s web to symbolize one’s benevolence conveys that a person cannot possibly have a strong connection with God if they rely on only their good deeds to carry them to the Promised Land: they must also fully dedicate themselves to their piety to truly create an enduring bond with the Lord. In addition, Edwards also communicates a spectacular simile to the audience in this passage. To delineate the potential of God’s fury to the reader, Edwards compares a human being to a spider being held in palm of God’s hand over the fiery pit of Hell. From this statement it can be inferred that God only saves those who truly earned his forgiveness; and as for those who did not totally commit themselves to their spirituality, the Lord could easily drop them into the pit of Hell with indifference. Lastly, Edwards compares God’s wrath to a bow and arrow towards the end of the passage. When a person commits a sin, the bow is bent, forming tension which will eventually need to be released, causing the arrow to strike its target. In this analogy, the arrow represents God’s fury, while the target represents the sinner. It can also be inferred from this comparison that the sinner has few options for retribution and faces certain damnation. In each example of figurative language in this passage, Edwards successfully…

As soon as I walked into the church, I could feel how tense the room already was. My two children grabbed my hands, fearfully, as we walked into the room filled with emotion. We searched for a place to sit. Pastor Edwards had already started his sermon, so we sat in the back pews. He immediately began pointing out our iniquities and used very vivid metaphors that clearly shown God’s wrath towards the congregation. When Pastor Edwards yelled, “You have offended Him infinitely more than ever a stubborn rebel did his prince; and yet it is nothing but His hand that holds you from falling into the fire every moment,” it was as if he aimed this directly at me (48).…

These evils would engulf the world if set free without any limitations. By exclaiming that” indeed these things are nothing; if God should withdraw His hand, they would avail no more to keep you from falling, then the thin air to hold up a person that is suspended in it.” (1). Jonathan Edwards points out the pious behaviors practiced solely in public, but not behind closed doors which do not lead to salvation. This is the understanding of a man who considers himself the shining beacon of example in following and submitting to God. He appears to see completely through the false followers, but by his own admission God is merciful and holds people in his palm. To convince the new comers and proven members of the flock the author is not afraid to describe the creator as a merciful being, but at the same time full of vengeance. While alive, there is the opportunity to be born anew, but death is looming and people don’t know the time or the day. Therefore in the moment when God does not hold people on his palm anymore they might a undoubtedly will fall into the fiery pits of…

It took great grace for Joseph to respond in this manner and it will take great grace for us to respond as well. But remember Paul’s instruction in 2 Corinthians 12:9-10, “But he said to me, "My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness." Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ's power may rest on me. That is why, for Christ's sake, I delight in weaknesses, in insults, in hardships, in persecutions, in difficulties.…

In the contemporary world, humility is seen unfortunately as a weakness, and not as a virtue. Why humility is seen like this? It is because the world in which we are living is a world of competition. Everybody is in competition for the best place. In every domain is a competition. For example in politic, they are in competition for who to lead the country, in economy for who to have the most develop business, even in culture & arts is a competition for who to be the best artist and so on. So in this search for…

Christ and Culture, authored by H. Richard Niebuhr in 1951, is a book which discusses how a Church or a Christian is to interact with ones culture. Niebuhr systematically answers this question by placing the church into the following five categories they have utilized through history to answer this question: "Christ against culture," "the Christ of culture," "Christ above culture (Christ synthesizing with culture)," "Christ and culture in paradox," and "Christ the transformer of culture."…

Today I am going to discuss whether we are true servants of Allah. Many of us say that we are Allah's servants but do are actions really confirm it. There are three ways in which we can check if we really are the true servants of Allah. First we must know that he is our master and we are his slaves and we are entirely devoted to him. Secondly, we should only do those actions which will earn his pleasure and stay from the actions which will make him angry. Third, we must know that all our possessions belong to Allah and therefore we should us it as he has commended. Coming back to the first point that we are his slaves and he is our master we must realize that as his slaves we must always submit 100% to the will of Allah. There is a story recorded in history in which a very well mannered and understanding slave saw that his master was very worried. The slave asked his master why he was so sad. The master responded that he had a high debt but no money to pay them off. The slaves suggested that he should be sold in the market and use the money pay off the debts. The master refused because his debts were so high that even if he were to sell the slave it would not be enough to cover his debts. So the slave said to set the price at the amount of the debts and if anyone asks questions regarding the high price then to just tell them that this slave knows the rules relating to servitude and being a slave very well. So the master went to the market and was trying to sell the slave at the price that his debts were. When people saw the price of the slave they just laughed and who can really blame them. I mean who would want to buy a slave that's really expensive when you can get one that s 10 times cheaper. After a little while a man came and asked the reason for the high selling price. To this the master responded that this slave knows the rules to servitude very well. The man decided to purchase him on the condition that if this was not true he would want a refund for the…
