BUS 240 Human Relations

1. Diversity can be defined as the differences that exist in the work place. The major groups in the workplace include race and ethnicity, religion, gender, age and ability. The five steps that I would use to move forward to ensure I am reaching, connecting and expanding diversity in my life are: a. Emphasize communication by ensuring all employees understand the policies, procedures, and safety rules. I would strive to overcome language and cultural barriers through training, and have relevant documents translated into different languages. I would also use standard pictures and symbols on warning signs so that everyone can understand the meaning.
b. View people as individuals by avoiding both positive and negative stereotypes. I would encourage my co-workers and people that are in my life, to view everyone as individuals and not judge others on their personal factors but focus on their work or personalities.
c. Encourage managers and team leaders to build diverse work teams. This would allow employees to expand their experiences along with to letting them see the strength of their combined talents and perspectives.
d. Establish one set of standards and expectations for everyone in order for them to perform to the best of their ability. I will make sure that I own up to my mistakes as well as not let others make excuses for their shortcomings. I will also base all employment actions, including disciplinary actions, on performance related criteria, not personal issues.
e. I will be receptive to other people’s views and ideas and encourage others to do the same. I will incorporate different perspectives and talents of individuals to achieve the goals set forth by the organization.

Each person is an individual, and by respecting this people can be valued on their contributions, and not subject to negative response due to their differences.
