Police say that the incident began when the driver sped away after police attempted to pull over the speeding vehicle on the Hume Highway.
Police pursued the car eight kilometres along the highway across the suburbs of Leichhardt, Ashfield and Chullora and eventually turned onto Canterbury Road in Bankstown, where the vehicle apparently blew a tyre.
The vehicle then crashed into the front of a hairdresser’s, injuring the shop’s proprietor, Ms. Anastasia Habib, who was struck by falling bricks.
Eyewitness Maria Gerace said, ‘It was awful. I thought someone must have been killed. It’s just so lucky there weren’t any customers in the shop.’ …show more content…

Ms Habib was pulled from the rubble by an ambulance and taken to Westmead Hospital suffering serious injuries. She now remains in a stable condition.

According to initial police investigations, the driver had also been wanted by police for questioning in connection with dangerous driving and car theft at the time of the pursuit.
