Humpback Whales Adaptation
Envision light rippling through the water. Boats above you flowing through the beautiful blue water. Noises all around. Animals swimming around in groups and alone. You see whales, dolphins, etc. Well now you are entering the Pelagic Zone. How do they survive in all the challenges they face? They must adapt to their ecosystem if they want to survive. “ An ecosystem is a biological community of interacting organisms and their physical environment.” Water pressure is very low and temperature stays the same because of the sunlight that is shining on the water of the pelagic zone during the hot days. The pelagic zone has the largest volume of 330,000,000 cubic miles, and the largest vertical range of 36,000 feet. The pelagic zone is where the …show more content…
There body is streamlined and they only have a few bristles on their heads. Definitely ,this helps the whales survive because their body can carefully glide through the water quicker to escape predators. ­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­In addition, the whales next adaptation is the way the humpback whale gets its air to breathe. a-z-animals.com states that “The humpback whale has not one but two blow holes, which are located on the top of the humpback whale's head.” Finding food, this adaptation helps the humpback survive because it allows them to hold more air and then they barely have to swim up to the top of the water. Just as important, ­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­the glorious creature’s next adaptation is what keeps the whales warm.Humpback whales have blubber that is located throughout the whale helps the whale control their body heat as whalefacts.org states. Absolutely, this helps them survive because with the extra layer they can keep warm and live in extremely cold environments that they normally couldn’t survive

    Marine mammals also breathe air, and must come up to the surface of the water to breathe. They have small lungs in relation to their body size compared to humans to reduce problems of nitrogen building up in the blood caused by diving. They have to make sure no water gets into the gas exchange system, and gas exchange must occur efficiently. Marine mammals have to be able to hold their breaths for long periods of time while they are diving. Air enters the lungs through the trachea, which splits into two bronchi and then smaller bronchioles. All of these tubes are held open by rings of cartilage. On the bronchioles are alveoli, where gas exchange takes place. These alveoli greatly increase the surface area:volume ratio, increasing the efficiency of gas exchange and more particles can diffuse at once. The alveoli are surrounded by capillaries so gases can diffuse between the air and blood. Mammals have a circulatory system, so their size isn't limited by their gas exchange system. Because mammals breathe air, unwanted particles sometime get into the gas exchange system. There is mucus in the trachea and bronchioles to keep them clean and moist.
