In the film, The Hundred Foot Journey, the actors are able to effectively portray the theme that treating your enemies with kindness rather than spite you can learn to eliminate your enemies and transform them to your greatest friends and can even people that you love. The actors were able to create this strong sense of theme through their ability to really connect with their characters, which convince the audience and connect with the characters.

The characters in The Hundred Foot Journey are separated between a French restaurant and an Indian family. The successful French restaurant monopolizes an area and makes it impossible for any restaurant to reach any level of success. An Indian family sees potential for a classic Indian style restaurant in a building across the street from the French restaurant. The family makes the risky decision to build a restaurant in the building and end up on an extremely difficult road to success for their restaurant. The French restaurant continuously sabotages the Indian restaurant and the Indian restaurant makes it a point to be mature and do the right thing. This plot contributes to the theme that you should treat your enemies with kindness and respect. The actors are able to convince the audience of their characters through their passion for cooking and for their love for the restaurants.

In one incident, a chef from the French restaurant secretly decides to light the Indian restaurant on fire. Instead of sabotaging the French restaurant back and fighting the fire with fire by reacting poorly, the Indian restaurant handles the situation with grace and kindness. The head of the restaurant ends up apologizing for what one of her cooks did and helps clean up the burn marks in the Indian restaurant. This situation and the way the Indian family handled it actually allow the French and the Indians to understand each other and actually become friend and even unite in a way where they end up loving each other. The acting portrayed throughout this situation is successful because it shows a true and realistic change in each character.

The son from the Indian family and an aspiring chef from the French restaurant start out as enemies and slowly begin to fall in love and respect each other. When the French woman treats the Indian son poorly, he continuously respects her and treats her with kindness. Similarly, another situation portrays the change of hearts between the Indian grandfather and the woman who is in charge of the French restaurant. These characters begin by loathing each other and learn to respect each other. By the end of the movie, these two characters fall in love. These examples from the movie connect to the theme of truly defeating your enemies by treating them with kindness and making them your friends and people you love. These actors are able to effectively convince the audience of their character developments and change of hearts.
