“The Way” is one of the most inspirational movies I have ever witnessed. It centers around a man, his son, and their journey along the Camino de Santiago. Tom, an esteemed Doctor, learns that his son has passed away in a storm while traveling along the Camino de Santiago. The movie shows scenes of the father-son relationship between Tom, and his son and it quickly becomes clear that the two did not always see eye-to-eye. Tom learns that his son has passed away, and immediately travels to St. Jean Pied de Port, France to gather the remains of his son. Upon his arrival, he soon decides that he has some unfinished business to complete. Rather than go home, and continue to live an unsatisfying life, he decides to make the journey along the Camino in order to honor his son’s aspiration to travel this historic pilgrimage. In the beginning, Tom is simply going on the Journey for his son’s sake, but as the journey progressed, it becomes clear that everyone has his or her own reason to travel the Camino. Along the journey, Tom meets a few interesting people, and soon creates an everlasting bond with them. Because I got to witness Tom struggle with the language, I realized how useful it will be to learn and know the basics of Spanish. I also was able to connect the movie to the day we had a guest speaker come chat about his personal pilgrimages, and pilgrimages around the world. It was extremely helpful learning about the Comino de Santiago after witnessing the film. It was nice being able to learn even more about the journey, and then to be able to obtain a greater appreciate the film. I am excited to learn more essentials in Spanish so that hopefully I will be able to apply them when I embark on my own journey along the Camino de
