Eugenics worked to identify a pure genetic race . They try to disallow people they saw as inferior from enetring the gene pool. Deaf people during the World War 2 era were thought to be a burden that depended too heavily on society. They oftentimes inadvertenly stopped them from reproducing, as they were concerned this could create deaf children. While sterlization laws didnt include deaf people, there are many accounts of families who sterlizied their children. Euginics was finally discarded , but some people believe that their goals still remain today.
During the early rise of deaf education, the use of sign language was seena s inferior. Those who spoke really well recieved more positive attention then those who used sign as a form of communication.
This video helped me to get a better understanding and gave me more insight on the deaf community. I never realized the opression that people of this community faced. Being a minority, I know what it feels like to be treated as if you are inferior.
