I think most international students like me whose English is not their first language always feel one thing in common. That is : writing is hard. I always thought that because its two different cultures, we learned something totally different from America. But after taking this class, I start to think that no matter where we come from, there is something in common between our writing styles. I think the factors contributed to a good writing is the same.
The first characteristics of good, effective writing is that it should have a clear, well-defined purpose. “ In many writing situations, part of your challenge will be determining your purpose, or your reason, for writing”(Hacker 3). When the teacher assign the paper, sometime they won’t just give you the topic of your essay. You need to fingur out what the essay about. Many instructors write their assignment prompts differently. “Instructors may include more questions or talking points than you can cover in your assignment, so rank them in the order you think is more important. One area of the prompt may be more interesting to you than another”(Purdue Writing Lab). Choosing your point and then you can decide your purpose. Are you going to support this idea or against the idea? What we wrote this whole term is MLA paper. After you know the purpose of your paper, what you need now to form a working thesis. In a good writing, the thesis statement needs to be clear. I wrote three papers by now and I think they all have a clear thesis statement. For example, in our second paper, which require us to choose specific person who is an outlier in your view. After all the factors Gladwell wrote in his book Outlier, I thought my purpose in this paper to convince people that the person I choose is an outlier. What I need is to find information that makes my choice satisfied the characteristics of an outlier. After knowing my purpose, I started to work on my thesis statement.
