Students I responded to: Brooke Hygema posted 5/14/14 ("Great explanations and detail! I never thought of signs posted, but that's a smart idea. Good job!") and Emily Bartholomew posted 4/19/14 (response: Great point on number two. I completely agree! Although I see where you are coming from on the first answer, I do not think it is worth people dying just because one person has crazy driving, but that is my opinion. Excellent explanations. :)") Do you think that boaters should be legally required to wear PFDs when on a moving vessel? Explain your answer.
Yes, i think boaters should be required to wear a PFD when on a moving vessel. Someone could easily get hurt if not. You could drown in the wake or even get ran over because other boats my not see you. Falling overboard could cause shock and then a person will not be able to swim properly. Not wearing a lifeguard is very dangerous and 37% of fatal accidents are because of falls overboard. Most of these could probably be prevented by the use of a PFD. Do you think that law enforcement should randomly stop boats to test if the operator is intoxicated? Explain your answer.
I think law enforcement should not randomly stop boats unless it looks like the operator may be intoxicated. It would offend many people if they just randomly got stopped and they weren't doing anything wrong. Many people do not want to be randomly stopped if they participating in an event such as skiing or tubing if they have done nothing wrong. Someone who is following the laws should not be stopped. How can the public be further educated about the use of PFDs and BUI?
The public could be further educated by pamphlets when you buy a boat. There should be more commercials on television about the use of PFDs and BUI. Many people never know these laws because they do not read the owner's manual. Law enforcement should be consulted if someone is unclear about PFDs or BUI.
