Huntsville Normal School: A Case Study
In 1875, the school opened up in Huntsville, Alabama and was called Huntsville Normal School. The school opened with 61 students and two teachers. William Hooper Councill, the first president and founder, introduced industrial education to the curriculum to provide students with practical skills that would earn them employment. In 1878, the school attracted private donors, the Slater and Peabody Funds, which provided vital financial support because of the developed of the industrial education program. After the success of the industrial education program, the school petition the state for a name change it to State Normal and Industrial School at Huntsville which, led to Alabama legislature to approve of an increase in its funding to $4,000
