Hurricane Harvey Case Study
The “Bearcats for Texas” effort raised $____ with all donations being sent to the Northwest Missouri Chapter of the American Red Cross to assist victims of Hurricane Harvey.

The campaign, organized by University Events Coordinator Gina Bradley, is composed of multiple student groups. The fundraiser launched at the first football game of the season for the Bearcats Aug. 31 at Bearcat Stadium, donations were collected through Sept. 8. “Dr. J wanted to do something so, I asked him what ideas he had and he said that he had already heard that there were students who wanted to do student organizations, the athletics department were doing some things,” Bradley said. “Several groups wanted to do something, we wanted to combine efforts and do something

“They went to help and and they went to the meetings.”

One of those students that wanted to help is junior Isaiah Conner with the Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity Inc.

“My organization was wanting to help the people of Hurricane Harvey,” Conner said. “I went to a meeting and they discussed that we should have a fundraiser at the football game to help with Hurricane Harvey. My organization was willing to fill in and help as much as we could.”
Donation boxes were available for monetary donations at several home sporting events, the student organizational fair, the B.D. Owens Library and in the Student Engagement Center.
Students and faculty were encouraged to donate whatever they could.
“Any little bit that you can donate is a big help,” Bradley said. “If you can only give a quarter, that’s still a quarter that they didn't have. I know students don’t just have tons of money to donate but if they can just drop a quarter or a dollar, every little bit makes a difference.”

According to Conner, this fundraiser will help those affected by Hurricane Harvey. He hopes this fundraiser will motivate more student organizations to participate in fundraisers like this

I’m Antonio Jones, just another student at the high school. I personally think that giving money to charity is a great idea. It’s a good way to spend and also share your money with people who don’t have much or none. Just for the simple fact that there are people all over the world that are starving. It would be okay if the school’s treasury could give 250$ to each or give 500$ to both, but they can’t.…

Charity is one of the leading foundations of America and even the entire world. It brings people together to provide for those in need. Without charity, the lives of many would be crushed or some even lost. A charity organization I was apart of, called Alpha Charity League (ACL), assembles men from the ages of 12 through 18 to get together and raise money for local charities, like the Chris Saiz Foundation. If Blinn could make another chapter of ACL and offered 15 hours of credit for participating, not only could we aid our community and those in need, but also put me through college stress-free.…

Greek Life helps mold the average individual into a more informed, well-rounded, better-prepared adult for today and for the future. Unfortunately, many are blinded by the negative stereotypes that come with Greek Life, but honestly, I couldn 't have chosen a better way to improve myself, inside and out. The constant support, that little push to achieve more, the shoulders to cry on when you 've had a bad day; these are the things that set us Greeks apart from non-Greeks and these are the reasons I have made it to where I am now.…

We live in a world of opportunity. Everyone deserves an opportunity, but, unfortunately, not everybody gets one. For those who are less fortunate, receiving donations may be the only way they get by in life. There are many high schools, clubs and organizations that sponsor charity drives in exchange for incentives. The fact that such events are helping those who are in need makes it clear that people can be good, but that sometimes they just need to be persuaded a little.…
