Julio Fernandez and his family had live in Guanaja for more than 15 years. An island that is located at the north part of Honduras and the first place that was affected by the Hurricane Mitch. They also had been announcing that it was not going to be strong but that they had to be prepare for anything that could happen.
The storms had begun and the Fernandez’s family was not that prepared.
For instance they started being affected even more. Floods and mudslides brought on by heavy rainfall washed away entire villages. Julio’s house was located at the central part of Guanaja, so his house had a wall of trees and many of them started to fall because of the tremendous winds that brought the hurricane. A week has pass and the family started to get without food so they sent the oldest child to the supermarket.
Many of the streets were destructed or disable because of the floods. Fernando, the oldest child, had to go in a kayak so that he could get there faster. The supermarket was pretty far from the Fernandez’s home. When Fernando was going to the supermarket a terrible storm was happening maybe it was of the worst of the hurricane. Some trees that were left started to fall and everything was getting awful. Juana, Julio’s wife, was starting to get worried because her son had been out for a long time and the hurricane was getting worst.
One of her neighbors was passing by the same situation but in her case was her husband who was lost. Juana was desperate and she was trying to get out of her house. Maria, the neighbor, noticed that Julio was stressed so she decided to talk to them. Everyone in the house were crying and Maria was worried too so they decided to stay together to support each other and wait to see what happen. Both of their members were lost and none of them knew a thing about them.
The weeks has passed and they announced that the hurricane was going away. For a moment they started to think that maybe they die. After this thoughts got to their minds everything was getting worst but not because of the hurricane it was because the thoughts were torturing their minds. Maria was in a way trying to think positive but it was really hard because Julia was really bad. After talking to her and trying to calm her down she tried to get in a positive attitude. Finally the hurricane was going away and the telephones started to work
again.
When Julio contact someone to look for his son they finally found Fernando. When he got back home he told his family what really happened and how he got stuck. He was already back home but Julia still was nervous. Maria got back to her house with her husband, they found him hours later Fernando was found. Hurricane Mitch left a lot of disasters that where not going to be solved in a short period.
