Husband
Throughout “How I Met My Husband” by Alice Munro there are some points of suspense and uncertainty as to which direction the story will head. First, how the relationship between Mrs. Peebles and Edie catapult Edie to new relationships. Then there is wondering where the relationship between Edie and Chris will head. This causes the short story to have two types of irony, situational and dramatic because of the direction the story starts off then changes and ends up.
Edie is a fifteen year old girl living on a farm. She has daily chorus to do on the farm that consist of doing laundry and making bread as well as cakes. On Edie’s family farm they have cows and one is about to give birth. They call Dr. Peebles to come over and assist the cow giving birth to twin calves. The family then invites Dr. Peebles over for dinner and while he is eating he is also observing Edie and tells her she looks smart. H says “my wife was looking for a girl to help her. Mrs. Peebles felt tied down with the two children out in the country.” Edie then gets hired to be Mrs. Peebles help. She does their laundry, a bit of cooking, and takes care of the children to take some of the responsibility off of Mrs. Peebles. Edie appreciates caring for their nice house and Mrs. Peebles really likes Edie. Then one day, when Edie is playing dress up with Mrs. Peebles clothes, Chris arrives at the door to get water at the pump. Edie begins to like him and when she encounters him at his house it leads to them kissing and fooling around. At this time Chris’ fiancé is in town at the Peebles’ house and when Mrs. Peebles and Chris’ fiancé Alice find out about Edie and Chris hooking up they are appealed. But Alice takes it to an extreme by saying “I can check to see if she’s a virgin, I’m a nurse, let me take a look.” Then Mrs. Peebles told Alice that’s crazy, you need to leave. After Alice leaves Mrs. Peebles told Edie to just put this behind us and did not fire her. Which is rare during this time period.

The first example of irony that sets the mood of this short story, was how it was John who had invited Steven over to play card and to keep, his wife, Ann company while he was away helping out at his father's farm. Little did John know it would turn out that Steven and Ann sleep together. Therefore giving this story an unenthusiastic mood to start off with.…

His roommate gives Shaun a lecture, similar to his talk with Liz, complaining that Shaun is being held back by Ed who refuses to leave, pay rent, or close the front door. Shaun’s roommate mentions that everyone at his office is out sick and that some crack-heads bit his hand on is way home the previous night. Shaun heads to his menial job where none of the other employees, who are mostly much younger high school kids, take him seriously. Shaun is left in charge due to the fact that everyone else mysteriously called in sick. His step father shows up at Shaun’s work to remind him about their dinner with his mum and suggests Shaun brings flowers to compensate for forgetting last time. This shows that Shaun is unreliable and irresponsible, even to his family. Shaun goes out to buy his mum flowers the day before their dinner, obviously not thinking. Double standards are clearly represented in the novel by Oscar Wilde, An Ideal Husband, that talks about the position of women in the society. In this play, women are attributed to several things, for instance, an idea that women stand for the irrational, women have a wonderful natural feeling concerning a number of things. They are able to discover everything except the most obvious things in society. In addition to these, the play as well indicates that the life of a man is more important and valuable as compared to a woman’s life. Wilde’s An Ideal Husband highlights the role of women in society in the 19th century in England.…

Janie’s life, like many others, is heavily influenced by her family. Her only blood related relative, Nanny, manipulates Janie by forcing her perspective of the world upon Janie. In the early days of Janie’s youth, she saw love and marriage as natural and beautiful. Janie’s mind wandered to the idea of love and marriage, and in the spur of the moment, kissed a boy. Nanny saw this and became furious. She rushed out and made Janie promise to never do that again. Nanny even slapped Janie out of rage. When Nanny finally calmed down, she explained to Janie her misfortunes with men. Telling Janie about how her and Janie’s mother were abused by white men, Nanny planted the seed of doubt in Janie’s head. Letting it seep in slowly would be too slow. Nanny needed to force this ideal into Janie’s mind, whether she likes it or not. It is apparent when after Janie is married off Nanny says “Taint no use in you cryin’ Janie. Grandma does been long a few roads herself. But folks is meant to cry ‘bout something or other, Better leave things de way dey is. Youse young yet. No tellin’ whut mout happen befo’ you die. Wait awhile baby, you mind will change” (Hurston 24). Janie explained to her grandmother that she was dissatisfied with her marriage, and her…

Janie’s story all began in Nanny’s backyard as a flashback to where she observes ‘a dust-bearing bee sink into the sanctum of a bloom.’ This vision not only leads to a sexual awakening, orgasmic experience to her but rather became a metaphorical representation of her voice and vision of love throughout her life. Bearing in mind that this was presently Janie’s philosophy of ‘a marriage’, she eventually sees Johnny Taylor and kisses him. This innocent act immediately caught Nanny’s attention which tempted her to marry off Janie to Logan Killicks, an elderly man, since he could have provided the financial support and protection that Nanny thought was best for her. However, marrying Killicks was depressing since he desecrated the pear tree. She was oppressed and forced into doing hard labour. Soon, her passionate and undying love made her forsake Logan and she went on for the ambitious, Joe Starks.…

Tea Cake is completely unlike her past two husbands; with Tea Cake, Janie feels young, alive, and like she has found her horizon. In a small game of checkers, “[Tea Cake] set [the checkers] up and began to show her and she found herself glowing inside. Somebody wanted her to play. Somebody thought it natural for her to play. That was even nice. She looked him over and got little thrills from one of his good points. Those full, lazy eyes with the lashes curling sharply away like drawn scimitars. Then lean, over-padded shoulders and narrow waist. Even nice!” (///). For the first time in Janie’s life, she, as a woman, is seen by a man as someone who is equal and is worthy of being treated right. Joe’s sense of gender equality continues when he asks her to work with him in the fields. While both of Janie’s previous husbands wanted her to work, Tea Cake gives Janie the choice of working and explains that he would like her to work with him so they can spend time together. Rather than seeing her as a mule like her past husbands had, Tea Cake sees Janie as a partner and a…

The plot structure in this story is chronological order. The arrangement of the plot elements it’s effective because its tells us exactly what the title is, how Edie met her husband. After waiting some time the love of their life comes back and marries them. Instead she while waiting for the pilot she met the mailman and married him. How do you feel when you see someone happy? Do you envy them or wonder what they have that you do not? Do you wish to covet what they have? Wishing to have something another has is a true human emotion. This human emotion is jealousy and this is the primary theme portrayed by the villagers in Ursula Wills-Jones’ short story entitled “The Wicker Husband”. As I look back at the story, it amazes me that almost all of the seven deadly sins present themselves before the story ends.…

The Person I would like to describe in this assignment is my Husband “Joel Limon”. As we are very alike it’s as if I were describing myself in many ways character wise. We laugh at the same time and the smallest and funniest things, we even say or think the same word when laughing or if we see something we know we’d laugh at. Almost every morning before he leaves to work while the kids are getting ready I ask him if he put on deodorant. I like everyone and our house to smell good. So he’ll then laugh or say he already smells like sunshine lol. I can tell what his activities are just by what he wears, if he puts his tennis shoes on and shorts he’s going to the gym, if he puts his tennis shoes and shades on he’s doing yard work, if he puts jeans and boots on he’s going to the store. He’s a hard worker and a good father, when I see him rolling his neck I know he’s stressed so I give him a neck massage. He’s 5’9, tanned complected, brown eye’s ( green contacts) tribal tattoo on his right arm, small mole above his lip, short haircut, clean shaven, wears a cross ring on his right ring finger and his wedding band on his left ring finger with a G-shock watch on his left wrist. He’s either funny or serious and by the expression on his face I can tell which mode he’s in. This concludes the description on my Husband for this Research…
