In the beginning of the novel, Mr. Jones, the owner of the farm, “had locked the hen-houses for the night, but was too drunk to remember to shut the pop-holes” (Orwell 1). Although this is the first page of the book, the reader already sees blatant corruption, that proves to serve as a vital theme throughout the text. Later in the book, after the pigs had already overthrown Mr. Jones, it was time to elect a leader. Orwell narrates “ There was only one candidate, Napoleon, who was elected unanimously” (Orwell 45). Orwell makes the corruption so obvious in these lines by using a single candidate, unanimous election to create contrast to a typical election which has many candidates and rarely features a unanimous decision. After Napoleon even became leader of Animal Farm, he set policies which were morally corrupt. He made animals do intensive labor which he claimed was optional, yet were necessary for survival :“This work was strictly voluntary, but any animal who absented himself from it would have his rations reduced by half” (Orwell 24). In Troublemaker, the members of Scientology are expected to set a positive example and act according to policy, but this is not the case. To illustrate, the most devout members of Scientology’s Sea Organization were caught drinking by Remini. Remini remembers “I was shocked at the sight of a Sea Org member drinking...something that was completely against policy” (Remini 137). Another moment of hypocrisy, which happened the same night, occurred when two more married Sea Organization members were all over each other. According to Scientology, members of the opposite sex are not allowed to touch each other when they are married.
