Anabolism and catabolism are two phases of the human body’s metabolic process. Metabolism is a process that is essential for humans to live a healthy and productive life. The anabolism phase is the process where the body builds up the needed molecules. This phase requires energy in order to complete the process. Catabolism releases energy that can be used by the organism. This phase is the process of breaking down the complex molecules into smaller portions. These two phases work together to help different organisms to grow, heal their wounds, create off springs and to adjust to their changing environment.
There are different types of exercise based on the type of hormone you want to produce or the phase of Metabolism you want to work with. If I wanted to build up or work in the anabolism phase then I would focus on exercises that would build you up. Exercises that involve weight are meant to build muscle and thus they would be an anabolic exercise. Exercises that increase energy would be catabolic exercises. Aerobic as well walking and swimming are exercises that increase your energy level …show more content…
and they burn fat.
Anabolic phase of metabolism works through a process where it uses the simple molecules in the organism. They use these molecules to create more complex and specialized compounds. The process of creating a product from a variety of components is called a synthesis. This would be why anabolism is called biosynthesis. Anabolism uses energy in order to create a product in the end results. This product is used by the organism in order to help it grow and flourish in life. Two of the most basic anabolic processes are increasing height and the increase of muscles. “At the cellular level, anabolic processes can use small molecules called monomers to build polymers, resulting in often highly complex molecules. For example, amino acids (monomers) can be synthesized into proteins (polymers), much like a builder can use bricks to create a large variety of buildings.” (Green, 2006)
The catabolic phase of metabolism releases energy through a process of breaking down the complex compounds in conjunction with the molecules to release the energy needed for the body to function properly. This process creates what is known as the metabolic cycle. This allows the anabolism to create more molecules that will be used in the catabolism process to work its break down process.
One of the key process of the catabolic phase is digestion. This is the process of substances that are consumed and then later broken down. This break down process changes the nutrients to simpler molecules allowing the organism to be able to better use them. “In cells, catabolic processes break down polysaccharides such as starch, glycogen, and cellulose into monosaccharides (glucose, ribose and fructose, for example) for energy. Proteins are broken down into amino acids, for use in anabolic synthesis of new compounds or for recycling. And nucleic acids, found in RNA and DNA, are catabolized into nucleotides as part of the body's energy needs or for the purpose of healing.” (Green, 2006)
A lot of the process that is involved in metabolism. Most of this process is controlled by hormones. these chemical compounds can either be based on anabolism or catabolism in terms of the effect they have on the body. Anabolism are responsible for a variety of hormones. Hormones such as estrogen and testosterone are two hormones that are gender specific. There is also the growth hormone as well as the insulin hormone that is needed to help the body function properly. Catabolism has its own set of hormones. The adrenaline hormone is one of the most well-known means of the human body to release energy. Cortisol is a hormone secreted when the body is under stress. This hormone has lots of different helpful resources. There is also the glucagon, that releases glucose and cytokines that helps the immune systems.
When you consider the effect that catabolism and anabolism on a person’s weight, you have to realize that weight is the result of “catabolism minus anabolism”(Baracos, 98). When you think about that it is the amount of energy released into a person’s body, then you take away the amount of energy that the body has used in a day. If there is an extra amount of energy left over then the body stores the energy as a fat, or it might be stored as glycogen in the liver as well as the muscles. When the goal is to lose weight then one needs to be able to increase their use of energy and decrease the amount of energy that is taken in.
People tend to give metabolism a bad rap. It is blamed for people’s weight issues. However what most people don’t realize is that the process by which one’s metabolism works changes very little from one person to another. The myth that there are people who have a high metabolism or that someone has a slow metabolism is simply not a scientifically sound thought. The differences that occur is directly related to the physical activity that a person performs combined with the amount of food they consume. People who are battle with excess weight simply take in more energy than they burn over on a frequent basis. This extra energy is stored in the body as fat.
There are several different disorders that are related to metabolism.
Two that affect a person’s weight are hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism. A person who is suffering from lowered levels of energy might have a thyroid that reduces the amount of hormonal ouput. This is known as hypothyroidism. People who suffer from this have a tendency to gain weight unless they are able to follow a stringent schedule of exercise and monitoring their diet very closely. When a person has hyperthyroidism they suffer from just the opposite. Hyperthyroidism is also a thyroid disorder which affects the amount of hormone that is excreted by the thyroid. People with this disorder have an excess amount of the hormone output and their energy level increases. They also tend to lose weight very rapidly and can’t seem to gain weight regardless of what they
eat.
Changing a person’s base metabolic rate is virtually unattainable for people who have a disorder that affects their metabolism. People with metabolic disorders must reach their goal weight through lasting changes in the foods they consume and the amount of exercise they participate in. The second phase of the metabolism process allows the body to build it muscle tone through the exercise that the person performs. The anabolic process works best with exercises such as dancing, yoga, or other types of physical activity which will ultimately produce a slimmer body as well as producing more energy. This increase in energy, is the second phase of the metabolic process, will be responsible for feeding the cells that make up the muscles. The catabolic process will break down anything, no matter how good or bad for you the food is. Yet the only way the anabolism will work properly is for the body to ingest the good foods.
Anabolism and catabolism are the results of a chemical reaction. These two processes are also affected by changes in temperatures. Most animals keep a steady body temperature. This results in somewhat constant amounts for the anabolic and catabolic processes. Animals that are classified as cold-blooded tend to be more influenced by the environmental temperatures. These animals are more animated when their temperature is higher than when it is cooler. When cold-blooded animals get too cold they will slow down to the point of hibernation. This concept is used when a person is to undergo surgery. The surgery process for the brain and heart is normally done in lower temperatures which cuases the patient to have a decreased anabolic and catabolic process.
