I Am Rovina Mansour
Hello, I am Rovina Mansour and I would like to share a short story about my life and my beliefs. I was born in Cairo, Egypt. I came from a conventional family who lived in a beautiful house together. I went to a Private Catholic Christian language school where we took all classes in English and had to speak English with our teachers and Friends. I was born as a Coptic Orthodox Christian like my family. My life was good and I never thought that one day we will move to the United States and will wake up and find myself in another world with people, that don’t speak the same language as I do, have a different culture, beliefs and traditions, and that I would be in the place where I would always just see in the movies, not in real life. There were those questions that I kept thinking and thinking about which are: How is it …show more content…
Is it going to be really tough at the beginning to make friends? Am I going to be able to communicate with them? I didn’t know the answers to my questions until that day came which was the first day of school (8th grade). I didn’t really know the answers to my questions before that day because when we came here, I didn’t have the chance to know people since I was always with my family or friends who speak in Arabic.

And now there came the first day of school, after 40 minutes waiting at the bus stop for my bus, yes, I went to the bus stop 40 minutes early ( excuse me I am new here, What do you expect?!). After I arrived at School, I was really lost and didn’t know where to go and I decided to take a big step which is ASKING FOR HELP!!. I didn’t expect that I would do that, but I actually did and the person that I asked for help was really friendly and that was a good start. So, I took the opportunity to introduce myself and vice versa. We talked for a while and I never regretted asking for help because it turns out that we ended up being good friends. The bell rang, which indicates that I

Starting American school was one of my biggest fears. I always questioned if I was going to be able to make new friends, or even understand the curriculum. I started the second grade in January, which meant I was entering the school year already half way over, making me the odd ball in class. Nonetheless, my classmates were very welcoming and I made friends quickly. I had been worrying about not being able to fit in, but it seemed like I was perfectly with all the great people I had met.…

Once we arrived to Illinois we went by 26st. There my father was waiting for us outside with my cousins and aunt. The first thing I did was reach for my father. Our first few weeks in Chicago were a bit lunatic. By saying that the next day after we arrived my sister and I went to the store and a shoot broke out. My mom came into the store running to pick us up. I honestly was scared of my new home. Once school started I started to have a bit of comfort in the neighborhood. Once I went to school it hit me that I was not anymore in Mexico, for I saw a lot of diversity. From black to white, to brown people I saw and I meet. I only saw white people on TV who were another ethic than me. During kinder I learned to read, count, and learn a new language…

The day started off as any normal day. My mother woke me up and said “we must go.” Her voice sounded very urgent for what I thought was just a trip to the grocery store. My mom laid my outfit on my bed and packed by book bag; that’s when I figured out that I was starting school. I wasn’t entirely oblivious to the fact that I was going to familiarize myself with a completely different environment, but I just thought I had a little more time to prepare. My story beings like any other, at the moment I took my first breath on July 30th 1998 in Bilisht, Albania. I was born in a small town in the lower region of Albania where my entire family lived with my grandparents under one household. My parents soon came to the realization that the current living situation was incongruous for a new family, such as ours, to thrive. As the result, my parents chose to apply for the government program granting our family access to move into a completely new society with new laws, regulations, political aspects and that was tens of thousands of miles away. Our family, at that instant, had a struck of luck as my mother’s name was drawn for us to move to the greatest country the United States of America.…

I believe everyone of us has a very individual learning style just as we all have very different personalities and upbringings. We all learn in different ways and have different needs to be able to learn. Some of us do better in a group setting to learn while others need to be alone. Some do better with the material they are trying to learn in print in front of them while others do better to listen to the material being presented to them. Some need both visual and auditory. I believe that I am a visual learner.…
