This quotation means that Jake got hurt in the war and the implication of this quote is that because of the injury that Jake suffered during the war, he is unable to have sexual relationships with females. This evokes my sympathy for Jake because he is such a nice and standup guy, but he is unable to be in a relationship with the girl he loves because of his physical barrier.
