I Have A Dream Speech Essay
The “Gettysburg Address” by President Abraham Lincoln during the Civil War and “I Have a Dream” by Doctor Martin Luther King Jr given during the March on Washington. These speeches both have common themes, freedom and equality and they both have rhetorical devices to emphasize the purpose. The purpose of the “Gettysburg Address” is to tell the people to continue the fight. The purpose of the “I Have of Dream” speech is to tell the people to demand their rights. This paper will analysis the two speeches and how they use rhetorical devices to emphasize their purpose.

He tells them to “Go back to Mississippi, go back to Alabama, go back to South Carolina, go back to Georgia, go back to Louisiana, go back to the slums and ghettos of our northern cities” He says these places because they are the worst in prejudice the he says the slums and ghetto to show all over the country. He has this sense of urgency it by saying GO. He expands this idea by saying “ Let Freedom Ring” he and he says many places to show everywhere they should proclaim their freedom their rights. Martin also says “We cannot be satisfied” many times, he is telling his audience that they cannot be satisfied with injustice, but instead he want them to demand justice their rights. Close to the end Martian says, “...the glory of the Lord shall be revealed, and all flesh shall see it together” this emphasizes the reward they will receive and every region person in the crowd would like to receive god’s glory as soon as possible adding to the urgency.
Both the Gettysburg Address and the I have a Dream speech have this sense of urgency and that freedom is important to them.     Martin Luther King Jr.'s in his I have a Dream speech. Like Washington, Martin Luther felt the need for a peaceful revolution which can be seen in the lines: "Again and again we must rise to the majestic heights of meeting physical force with soul..." whereas in Douglas's slave narrative he takes a more physical approach. Another difference between Martin Luther's speech and Douglas's slave narrative is the way Martin Luther writes using repetition seen in the lines:"I have a dream that one day...i have a dream today...i have a dream...". Douglas on the other hand doesn't repeat any specific word of phrase to achieve his point. Some similarities include the appeal to humanity and way to feel bad for one and also a desire and hope for freedom. In addition, both pieces display a longing for freedom.     Throughout the speech, King frequently appeals to pathos, but he uses all three of the Aristotelian appeals effectively. He uses appeal to pathos to let his audience realize what type of condition the African Americans are in. He uses another appeal to logos to persuade the African Americans to take actions and also to use it for transitions. He also uses appeal to ethos to keep the readers and the audiences to be interested. According to King’s speech, he stated, “But one hundred years later, the Negro still sadly crippled by the manacles of segregation and the chains of discrimination….And so we’ve come here today to dramatize a shameful condition.” This quote means that after one hundred years free from being slaved, African Americans were still not free through discrimination and segregation. That’s why hundreds of thousands of African Americans came at the Lincoln’s Memorial to dramatize these conditions. King uses anaphora on this quote to emphasize the repetition of the phrase at the beginning of the consecutive sentences to let the reader or the audience know what happened after ‘one hundred years.’In paragraph one to six, the purpose of this section was to introduce the information to the audience about what they needed to know. According to King’s speech, he stated, “…a great American…signed the Emancipation Proclamation. This momentous decree came as a great beacon light of hope to millions of Negro slaves….. But one hundred years later, the Negro still is not free…. We’ve come here to dramatize a shameful condition…. In a sense we’ve come to our nation’s capital to cash a bad check….., that has come back marked as “insufficient funds”. But we refuse to believe that the bank of justice is bankrupt.” This quote means that the Emancipation Proclamation was the greatest hope for all African Americans to be free. But after one hundred years, they were given a ‘bad check’ because they were facing through many discriminations and segregations.…
