I want to be in a healthcare profession where I get to spend quality time with my patients and help them improve their quality of life in all aspects. Occupational therapy addresses the importance of people’s psychological and emotional well-being, as well as their physical needs. This field requires sensitivity, understanding, compassion, and patience, all characteristics I possess. It is a career that contributes much to society and brings great self-fulfillment.

A man came in for therapy because of spasticity in his right upper extremity due to a secondary stroke. Eventually the man regained full functional use of his upper extremity and I was able to witness the progression. It was an eye opening experience and in that moment I knew I wanted to become an occupational therapist.
I am excited this field uses activities that are most important to the patients as the basis and end goal of therapy. Occupational therapy has diverse settings allowing creative treatment plans for each unique individual. I love that it encourages creativity and that each therapy session is personalized according to the goals of the patient.
My exercise science major has allowed me to gain knowledge and skills through hands on experience, group work, and coursework, creating a strong foundation needed for graduate level work in an occupational therapy
