IOM Report
The Institute of Medicine was established in 1970 by the National Academy of Sciences to evaluate nursing education. To achieve and maintain the goal, nursing education has to be evaluated frequently. In 2008, the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF) and the Institute of Medicine (IOM) proposed a program to evaluate and renovate the nursing profession. The selected Committee from IOM made suggestions for future nursing. Nurses are chief in providing care among all other health care professionals. Nursing education has important role in providing safe practice. Nurses are the dominant to provide safe, quality, patient-centered, accessible, and affordable care to patient. New graduates always excited to know the profession first. As the career goes on leadership is essential to evolving the profession. The leadership associated competencies should be added throughout nursing education. Leadership development and tutoring program should be made available for nurses. Make sure nurses are ready to accept nursing leadership role. Bring up a culture that encourages and ideals leadership needs. All nurses from students to researchers must take accountability for their individual and professional development by developing competencies. They must practice these competencies in all area and all settings. This would be in hospitals, Communities, schools, boards, and or in any other settings. Also this can be inside nursing or outside nursing with other health professions. This will help to tutor others and improve scope of nursing practice. The leadership in nursing will help to develop corporations and improve associates within health care environment. To become a leader nurse has to achieve higher education along with other competencies. Recommendations from the IOM report, most the challenges and issues in nursing education taken care by organizations, federal and state government so that, more nurses are involved in leadership program. Nurses work in different areas like hospitals, long term care facilities and many other places with different levels of education and holding different position. When a licensed practical nurse provides care to a patient as a bedside nurse, nurse scientist does the research to evaluate more effective way of caring for patients and promoting health. The committee considered nurses across roles, settings, and education levels in its effort to visualize the future of the profession.
In 2004, the National Quality Forum (NQF) recognized the initial set of nationally standard study given current concerns about a shortage of primary care health professionals, the committee paid specific consideration to the role of nurses, especially APRNs in this area. Now –a day nurse practitioner are working with physicians to deliver most of the primary care. They can see patient, diagnose and treat without physicians.
