IAEA backgrounder
Introductory Letter
Dear Delegates,
It is with delight and elation, that I welcome you to the International Atomic Energy Agency committee of CAHSMUN 2015. The IAEA is quite the interdisciplinary committee, calling on multiple dimensions of international relations, from science, to environmental issues, to public health, economics, and beyond. Thus, when drawing up resolutions, delegates must be especially broad-minded and insightful toward issues not only concerning atomic energy, but all aspects that it should affect.
The two topics to be discussed were carefully chosen to not only address pressing global issues, but also to appeal to the delegates’ previous experience. Improving Global Emergency Preparedness for Nuclear Crisis Situations and Nuclear Energy Technology in Developing Nations vary reasonably in nature, however, both aim to achieve a common goal, which is to provide safe and secure nuclear energy for all.
Model UN is an authentic simulation of the UN, in which delegates need to think critically and spontaneously, in combination with thorough and effective research, to represent one’s respective country to the best of their abilities. I am more than confident that the IAEA will be an exciting and rewarding experience for all delegates regardless of skill, background, or age.
As a junior in Burnaby North Secondary, I was pulled into the abyss that is Model United Nations sometime during my tenth year of school. It was love at first role call, and I have immersed myself in the sport ever since. On the rare occasion that I am not scrambling together backgrounders or memorizing SAT vocabulary, I can be found practicing hot yoga, cooking with tofu, and enjoying other means of basic-ness.
I once again extend my warmest welcome to all of you, and will be happy to provide you with any needed assistance, leading up, during, and after the conference, via iaea@cahsmun.org.
Best,
Lucia Zhang
