Ibiza
Imagine Las Vegas as a beautiful beachfront island, with no rules, perfect weather, crystal blue water, and an even more outrageous nightlife. Imagine landing in your destination, and everyone on the plane begins cheering, laughing, and drinking. Well this place is Ibiza. Now I had no idea what Ibiza was till me and three of my best friends backpacked throughout Spain this past May. Everyone we talked to that has studied abroad over there made it very clear to us though that we had to stop in Ibiza if we were going to Spain. So, we decided to end the last week of our trip in Ibiza and it was an unreal experience.

Ibiza, Spain is an Island located just off of Valencia, in the Mediterranean Sea. Not known to many Americans, Ibiza is a tiny island estimated about 200 square feet, which is about half the size of Phoenix. It’s full of culture, dancing, parties, music, and beautiful scenery. If you have heard of Ibiza you probably know that it is known as the party capital of the world.

Ibiza is broken into two main sections, the North region and the South region. The South, typically known as “Old Town” is the outrageous party side of the Island with nightclubs on every corner, including Privilege, which holds the official Guinness World Record for the “Biggest Club In The World”. Thousands of people from all over the world travel to Ibiza during the summer months including the worlds best DJ’s. But, the nightlife in Ibiza is something that you have to experience for yourself to truly appreciate it. Whereas the northern area is more known for its landscape and extraordinary beaches. It’s a more peaceful side of the Island compared to its hard partying neighbor. This side of the Island offers everything from white, sandy beaches to beautiful rocky coves all surrounded by crystal blue water. Even 100 yards out you can still see down to the breathtaking reefs in the sea.

Several summers ago, shortly after I graduated 6th grade, my mother and I took the pilgrimage that all East Coasters with a week of free time and a fresh passport must take. By this, of course, I refer to seven days of good old fun-in-the-sun in a Caribbean resort. Like many other families, we had planned to go directly to the resort town of Punta Cana, in the Dominican Republic, until our flight back to New York departed a week later. And so it was, for several days at least. But lazy afternoons and evenings on the beach can become stale after a while. It was pleasant, for sure, but not stimulating. Punta Cana hadn’t captured my attention as the bright lights of Hong Kong or the ancient history of London had. There was no local flair, nothing…

Fannie Poteet sat cross-legged on her Uncle John's front porch; her favorite rag doll clutched under one arm. The late afternoon sun shone through the leaves of the giant oak tree, casting its flickering light on the cabin. This golden motion of light entranced the child and she sat with her face turned upward, as if hypnotized. The steady hum of conversation flowed from inside of the cabin.…

Passion is known as the strong emotion that motivates us to move beyond our comfort zones to achieve the potential that resides within us. Passion is a powerful driving force. Reason is the capacity of conciencely making sense of things also known as logic. Reason or logic, is the foundation of rationality. The real question is, does passion and emotion overcome the logic behind people's concience? Precisely. Daniel Golman, the author of Emotional Intelligence, once stated," Imagine placing a plank of wood on the ground and walking it's length a few times. It is easy enough. But suppose you placed it a hundred feet in the air between two buildings. You know you can walk the plank. You did it over and over again. Yet now the emotion kicks in. The what-ifs and unconcience mind supercede the concrete knowedge of your ability to walk the plank. At the end, you don't walk." Emotion has the ability to overcome reasoning, because it brings fear, memories, close-ties to the situation, and the famous what-ifs a.k.a, doubt. Bringing those forces, can cause anyone to collapse, and follow the leader, the one who could conquer what was suppose to make sense, leaving people in perplexity and doubtful of their own reactions and thoughts. Plus, it emotion takes less effort. So yes, emotion does overcome logic and reason. The overcoming of emotion is intense and very common, leaving prints all over history, in literature, but the best way to actually understand is to experience it on your own, and that's exactly what I did.…

I have never been to a Spanish speaking country, but would like to visit in the future. In some Central American countries you say “ buen provecho” when you serve food to someone, and it is also customary to say “ muchas gracias” after the meal. In Spain it is customary to say "que aproveche" or "buen provecho" before the meal when serving, and the response by the guests (or diners) would be "gracias". Paella is served in Spain during the springtime festival, Las Fallas. It has rice, meat or fish, saffron, paprika, and a variety of other spices. Along the northern region of Spain there are the Basques. Basque music uses a lot of vocals, specifically choir-singing, in their music. They have some unique musical instruments: the Txalaparta (a wooden instrument played with sticks), and the Txistu (a one-handed shepherd's flute), and the Alboka (a horn-clarinet). Cuenca is the capital city of Cuenca Province, central Spain. The city covers an area of about 17,061 square kilometers and the population there is about 54,600. Cuenca features a number of monuments and rivers with clear waters. Cuenca is also listed in the UNESCO World Heritage Site for its monuments. Replicated natural wonders of the world, indoor man-made waterfalls, simulated pirate ship battles, a dolphin habitat, and indoor gondola rides are a few of the small attractions that place modern day Las Vegas as a hotspot on the US map. In fact, there are so many small attractions blended with large attractions that the experience of Las Vegas itself has become an attraction. Disregarding traditional methods and exploring outrageous ideas in the areas of engineering, architecture, and planning, this city has become a very accepted destination that has become a marketing phenomenon. For a city that is in the middle of nowhere, it has a made quite an impression on the people it draws. It is no surprise that this city has had a history of prosperity and boom.…

When I go abroad, I really get the feeling that I'm living in a big world and that all my worries are so small and pointless. It would be great to go to a country I have never been to before. I've heard from many people who've been to Europe that Barcelona was the best place they'd ever visited. Barcelona is a city that has beautiful beaches and is known for having sunny and clear weather, so if I had a chance of going to any country I wanted to, I'd choose Barcelona as my ideal vacation location.…
