COMPETITIVE LANDSCAPE
Unilever Australia Ltd remained as the leading player in 2014, with 31% value share. Its share declined marginally in recent years, particularly in bulk dairy ice cream where it failed to produce an attractive premium brand to compete against Australasian Food Group’s Connoisseur brand. Instead the Streets brand appeals to older demographics who desire a simple traditional ice cream, an appeal that is gradually slipping. Unilever ranked third in bulk dairy ice cream, whereas it led multi-pack dairy ice cream and single portion dairy ice cream, dominating the latter with 62% value share, much of which comes from the
Magnum brand.
Whilst Unilever is strongest in impulse ice cream, Australasian Food Group is the leading player in takehome ice cream with 30% value share. As Australian ice cream progressively shifted away from impulse ice cream and towards take-home ice cream, this has been to Australasian Food Group’s benefit, as its share mostly edged up over the last decade, from 24% value share in 2004.
