Several competitors exist from specialty music stores like Virgin or Tower Records to mega, superstores like Wal-Mart. The pricing of products in the media department will vary based on various factors such as popularity and pricing at competing stores. Managers of the store spend a…

BCBG provides most of its sales revenue through "bricks and mortar" stores, which means they have a physical presence. For the most part they generate their business through their own retail stores, as well as wholesaling to Macy 's, Bloomingdale 's and Saks. But they also do a lot of their business online. They offer their own BCBG websites as well as selling on the Macy 's, Bloomingdale 's and Saks websites. They also sell to specialty boutiques online such as Edressme.com. BCBG has hit the stores and the Internet to generate their profit. The organization makes out very well from both aspects and they have Account Executives that monitor both the buying from online and the physical stores that they have for each region of the country. Management is also broken down into the departments and lines that are being sold, and each takes on both the online part and the physical stores responsibilities. They offer almost the same merchandise online as they have in the stores and generally the pricing is the same. But online stores sometimes offer more discounts. The pricing strategy used by BCBG is that of high quality fashion at contemporary price points. This designer or couture fashion, although at a high-end price zone, is priced reasonably low for the quality. The uniqueness of the demographics of BCBG is that the…

Penny’s code of ethics, they talk about their commitment to their customers under the “Communications” heading. The company lists fairness and honesty as two values they always strive to abide by in everything they do. It mentions that they always ensure any message they release to their customers is accurate and truthful, and that they aspire to comply with all laws in the areas of product pricing, which they evidently failed to do so in this case. They also assure their customers that they should always be able to trust the company to do what is honest and right. Under their corporate social responsibility report, they mention that J.C. Penny was founded on the beliefs of James Cash Penney, who originally named the company the “Golden Rule Store” to emphasize his belief in treating others as he would want to be treated. Additionally, they claim that while the company has evolved greatly since it was founded, it still operates in accordance with Penney’s core values of demonstrating integrity and the highest ethical standard in everything they…

Conversely, 32% of nonwinning retailers still say the store should be the primary beneficiary vs. only 23% of Winners. This kind of shift is typical of Winners, who have a tendency to identify the need to change direction sooner, and make that change faster. 43% of retailers under $250 million in revenue report that they dump data into Excel as their primary method for BI insights. Only 13% of mega-retailers report this, and an even smaller 5% of retailers bringing in between $1-5 billion in revenue. The top two opportunities reported by our overall survey respondents are merchandising-oriented: what-if capabilities for matching demand with assortment, price, and promotions, and more intelligent space and product allocations, which on the surface seem a lot more product-oriented than…
