Image, is defined by the Merriam-Webster Dictionary as a picture that is produced by a camera, artist, or mirror; a mental picture, the thought of how something looks or might look, and as the idea that people have about someone or something (“Image”, n.d.). The public’s image of nursing is influenced by all these concepts. Throughout the years, the nurse’s image, mental picture, or the people idea about the nurse, it have been represented by the media, periodicals, or movies with negatives stereotypes: the naughty nurse, the heart breakers, the sexy nurse, unintelligent, uncaring, or the one that just call code blue when the patient is in trouble. The media (TV, radio, internet), continue nowadays playing a significant role in the society’s negative view of the nursing profession, acting as a powerful force that shape how people think about nurses, forming the public’s attitudes toward nursing, and prejudicing many young people from entering the field. The public needs to embrace the nurse profession as a whole, and be aware of the many roles the nurse perform (communicator, counselor, teacher, manager, leader, motivator, delegator, critical thinker, innovator, researcher, and above all, patient-advocate) as a highly skilled independent clinicians, not just as physician helpers, as usually are represented. For example, the media rarely portrays nurses providing care in settings other than the hospital, such as community clinics, outpatient facilities, or in the home.
