“If I Grow Up” takes place in the Frederick Douglass Project during the present. The main conflict in the story is if the narrator Deshawn will live to be older, grow up, or be killed due to gang violence. The book begins with a kid named Darnell falling from the balcony of his apartment and the main character Deshawn went outside to see what had happened while all the neighbors gathered around to see the dead body.
