ifs and buts
topic: “Ifs and buts won’t lead us to success” A lot of people have an attitude that involves a lot of “ifs” and “buts”. This kind of attitude often becomes a huge hurdle in the path that leads up to success. People who welcome everything with either an “if” or a “but” are essentially the people who are quite unlikely to succeed in life. Why is that so? Experiencing different things gives people an edge. Going out and involving one in various kinds of activities, give them a lot of experience and knowledge about various things. Since no knowledge ever goes to waste, one never knows when their experiences might come handy. Thus, people who are always read to be on the go are more likely to succeed. On the contrary, people who are always stopping themselves by providing an excuse or who are always indulging in arguments based on ifs and butts, often lose out on some of the best opportunities of life. These people let go of chances which can teach them some very good lessons. And without the important lessons, these people lack the basic strong foundation which is important for gaining success. When a person puts the clause of an “if” or a “but”, they restrict themselves from doing things that should otherwise be done and which they are usually capable of doing. Thus, people should make a very sub-conscious effort of turning every “if” and “but” into something more positive. Every time there is a situation where an “if” or a “but” comes into your mind, replace it with an “I should”. Paul J Meyer who developed principles of personal development and professional excellence said that, “Success is the progressive realization of predetermined, worthwhile, personal goals.” And the fact is that this realization begins to dawn only when people start taking steps and begin to do something. People, who sit with one leg resting over another all the time, do not ever realize their potential, calling or goals. Even when they realize it, their inactivity

For example, athletes who experience failure during practice will allow them to highlight their weaknesses and to use the errors the made as a reference for improvement. To Illustrate, sports are heavily dominated in perfectionism and often times failing is not an option because failure to them is the most stressful situation they can experience and they would go to such great lengths to avoid failing. According to Roger von Oech in his essay called To Err Is Wrong, he introduced the concept of “playing it safe” and he mentioned “Most of us have learned not to make mistakes in public. As a result, we remove ourselves from many learning experiences except for those occurring in the most private of circumstances” (Oech 6). Therefore, this can be problematic for athletes because they have placed themselves so high up on the pedestal to avoid failure and that this can be a painful, if they experience failing because the height they had set themselves at the higher they will fall, and it will be detrimental for their self-esteem; since, they might not comeback from falling so high on their imaginary…

In life, to successfully move forward I need to establish goals. “The tragedy in life is not reaching your goal, but having no goal to reach” (Leadership for Student Activities, 2005). I must have a plan of how I will achieve my goals and be able to identify when an important element of that goal is reached. Possible setbacks must be considered and purposeful schemes arranged for when the unexpected shows up. According to Deci and Ryan (1984), “Goals, whether trivial, routine, significant or life altering, are part of peoples everyday lives”.…

The book Major in Success, by Patrick Combs, is an interesting guide to analyzing and reflecting on one’s own state of mind and true feelings within life. Combs clearly states his purpose and point of view in regards to why he chose to write the book in the first place in second paragraph of the first chapter. The term extraordinary drive, described as the “magic ingredient that will make your dreams come true,” sets the tone of the book that really engages the reader in a rollercoaster ride of critical thinking in regards to the text.…

Defining success is never as simple as it seems. People spend their entire lives aiming to be successful in their goals, but in actuality, many individuals don’t even know what it is they’re striving to achieve. The reason for this is that success can be defined in a number of different ways depending on the person that you ask. In particular, countless individuals associate success with the widespread idea that achieving milestones such as gaining wealth or power; but for others, defining success is a more difficult, personal, and complex experience.…

I then believe, consequently, that they aren't living their lives to their fullest possible extent. That is to say, Michael Oher, the greatest NFL Quarterback star, would not have arrived at where he is today by sitting and waiting for life to make him successful. He had to work past innumerable obstacles and set backs, but he didn't give up, not once. The same can be said for Gabby Douglas winning the Gymnastics Golden Medal at the Olympics. She knew she had to go the full mile or not at all. If she had just dabbled, she would've come no closer to her dream, and she would've missed out on winning the Olympic Games. These examples help stress how sitting around will not get you to where you wish to go but actively chasing your possibilities…

"The greater danger for most of us lies not in setting our aim too high and falling short, but in setting our aim too low and achieving our mark." This quote is significant to a wide variety of people for the mere fact that everyone goes through this. I think that at one point or another, most people will realize goals are meant to be set high rather than low. I also believe people often experience this danger through becoming lazy. The human race is much too powerful to be unproductive. If we set our aim too low, we become incapable of reaching our goals. True satisfaction comes from hard work and morals. An example of this comes from literature. It's Kind of a Funny Story by Ned Vizzini, tells the hardships of a young man who becomes suicidal and checks himself into a psychiatric hospital. The young man, Craig was at his deepest set of depression when he had no motivation. However, when Craig stayed positive with his goals set high; he overcame depression. Another example comes from a film called "Rudy." When Rudy experiences pain and hardships he refuses to be let down. As Rudy reaches for a goal most believe to be out of his reach, he does his best and proves them wrong. From history, we learn that Rosa Parks was a woman who embodied this quote. It was the year 1955 in Alabama, when Parks refused to obey a bus driver's order that she give up her seat and make room for a white passenger. Her action showed she had something to prove, and she was not going to be pushed around anymore.…

However, success is about working hard toward something and achieving a goal. Each and every person should set small goals for themselves on a regular basis. Setting small goals will then lead to setting even bigger goals since you know you can accomplish small ones. When those goals are met, in addition to being feeling elated, you will also feel better about yourself knowing you were successful in accomplishing a goal that you had previously set. Everybody’s definition of success is different, however, success can only be attained if you work hard toward it because nothing will ever come easy in…

Everyday people make decisions that might have a big influence on their future lives. One can never say if this or that decision is right simply because there is no right or wrong. The choices that people make or believe in depend on their individual qualities and personal preferences. Therefore, what is right for one person might be totally wrong for the other. The only thing we shouldn’t forget is that once the decision is made there is no way back, once the action is done there is no way to change it.…

Everyday people are stuck facing new things, whether it’s asked of them or forced upon. Throughout someone’s early life, he or she is surrounded by the people closest to them: parents, friends, co-workers, that they are taught or influenced by every day. After one makes a decision there is always either a good or a bad outcome. After one makes a choice it is most likely followed by another. Not everybody has control over the reaction after their choices are made. Sometimes you don’t always get to see the outcome of doing something good, or you might not like the reaction you get of making a bad choice. Either way it’s up to the person to make the decision. Let it be good or bad, determine their outcome in the end, and how they handle the situation.…

I think a personal philosophy of success should be a hope or dream to both people who want to achieve a dream in the future and to people who hasn’t achieved their dream in life. For instance, someone has many degrees of higher education; but has the need to want a higher degree; so his/her philosophy of success would be to get a senior degree. Another example would be someone who doesn’t have anything in life; but want to achieve a dream to make his/her life worthy; so his/her philosophy would be to earn a dream that he/she has been yearning. I would be one of those people who have a diploma; but want to achieve a superior degree. As I quote from Albert Einstein “The ideals which have lighted me on my way and time after time given me new courage to face life cheerfully, they have been Truth, Goodness, and Beauty. . . . The ordinary objects of human endeavor -- property, outward success, luxury -- have always seemed to me contemptible.” This quote makes me think of my background, where I came from, how far I’ve come, and looking back at all the people who have supported me in life. My personal philosophy of success would be to achieve my personal dream as a doctor. I have had the dream of one day becoming a doctor since the death of my grandparents and the people around me that are sick, dying, and in need of medical care. I always wanted to be the person who saves another life. I want to be an example for my peers, my children, and children peers. I want to be someone that both my generation and the generation that follows to respects, honor and follow not only in my footsteps; but in other honorable wonderful successful individuals who make something of themselves. I am strongly willing to bring forth my dream by preventing and stopping anything that comes in the direction of my path to success. For example: drugs, alcohol, and peer pressure. I think those three things will not prevent me from not achieving my goals if I wasn’t as strong as I am today. My most…

What does success mean to you? Success is the ability to overcome challenges and to get to your desired outcome. Success depends on you, it is dependent only on what your desired outcome is. According to Abraham Lincoln success is expressed as “always bear in mind that your own resolution to succeed is more important than any other.” Abraham is expressing the importance of the resolution of success. I agree with Abraham there is nothing better than the resolution to succeed. To be more successful you have to make changes in your life, some of these changes are not so easy and conflict with yourself but in order to succeed there must be a change. This year I have to make some changes to myself in order to succeed.…
