prevent drug trafficking even within it’s borders which results in neighboring countries suffering from Mexico's drug problem. All of these issues have resulted in Mexico being looked upon as a failed state by other nations. The Mexican government has been unable to combat any of these issues which effect it's neighboring countries tremendously. Violent crime in the United states has been on the rise with illegal immigrants committing a large portion of all rape(s), homicide, and assault crimes in America. However despite all the downsides of illegal immigration in America, agriculture has flourished due to the number and skill set of immigrants who work on farms, plantations, and ranches which provide millions of dollars worth of fruits, vegetables, dairy and various other goods which fill up shelves at local grocery stores. While agricultural jobs available immigrants can result in lower cost to produce food, this also brings in more immigrants to the country. Job loss is arguably the most serious issue as a result of illegal immigration from Mexico in the United States.
Some of the most common jobs that suit illegals best are cooks, construction work, housekeeping, grounds/maintenance work, and agricultural (farms with direct connection with the grocery market). The population of illegal aliens in America is estimated to be around 20 million , roughly the population of New York state. With this many undocumented people living and working off the books in the United States, the government is losing tens of billions of dollars in tax revenue around the country. This is money that can be used for so many things to help better the entire United States such as military spending, school budgets, and things all the way down to cleaner communities for the citizens. The author of the internet article “The Dark Side of Illegal Immigration” stated that “The Center for Immigration Studies, which is in favor of some restrictions on immigration, recently issued a report looking at jobs and undocumented workers. One of its conclusions was that between March 2000 and March 2005, only 9 percent of the net increase in jobs for adults went to people born in the US.” American citizens are being out out of work due simply to the fact that the illegal immigrants will work for considerably lower wages than …show more content…
Americans. The war on drugs is weighing heavily on the United States with 90 percent of all cocaine and 80 percent of all crystal meth sold, distributed, and used within the Unites States, some large quantities of heroin and mass amounts of marijuana also come into the United States from Mexico as well.
Mexico has the worlds largest and most complicated and intricate drug network, stemming from Mexico's widely corrupt government's inability to gain control of the drug trafficking and manufacturing within it's borders. Not only do the drugs cripple societies in Mexico and America, the drug cartels are vicious and battle for sales and territory all around the border and even into some more northern states as well. It seems that the drug violence increased greatly when Calderon took office in 2006. He made various statements and vowed to eliminate drug trafficking and end the war on drugs. This was met with drastic increases in drug violence in and out of Mexico, cartels grew and the war on drugs swelled even more. Police officers are bribed with large sums of money each day in order to overlook drug cartels and their operations to spread drugs around Mexico and the United States. As stated in the internet article “Mexico's Drug War' written by Brianna Lee, “Corruption and weakness in Mexico's judicial and police sectors have largely allowed the drug trade to flourish. The police are easily bought, in part because of their meager earnings (about $9,000-$10,000 a year), which fall below the average salary for public-sector
employees.” Violent crime numbers including murder, forcible rape, assault have gone up steadily alongside the number of illegal immigrants flowing into the United States. Statistics show that in Arizona, specifically Maricopa county, 22 percent of all felons are illegal aliens. In 2004 8.1 million inmate records were reviewed from state prisons as well as 45 county jails (such as Maricopa county jail) and it was found that 22 percent of all inmates were foreign -born. These statistics are extremely alarming due to the fact that non-citizens only make up roughly 8.6 percent of the total adult population in the United States. Many of these crimes are a direct result of the war on drugs, from rival gangs fighting for territory and dominance over certain areas to simple illegal immigrants stealing from people just to survive being in the country. In an illegal immigration study written by Jessica Vaughan and Steven Camarota, they wrote “Top federal immigration officials, as well as top congressional and executive branch officials, emphasize repeatedly that aliens who commit crimes are a top enforcement priority, partly by launching big-ticket programs to accelerate the pace of removals. Meanwhile, many advocates for immigrants and other immigration law enforcement skeptics insist that this attention is misplaced.” All the measures taken in order to combat the crime and drugs coming from the illegal immigrants have cost billions in deficit spending for the United States, border patrol agents salaries, equipment costs, checkpoints on the border, prison expansions, deportation costs etc.
