things about illegal immigration, the American government needs to try to make a compromise so that both those who are for and those who are against illegal immigration can gain something.
Illegal immigration is a positive thing because it allows immigrants who have risked everything, including their lives, to find safety in America. Many immigrants are looking to come to America because they feel unsafe in their own country. According to Roque Planas, national reporter for The Huffington Post and author of the article, “These Are the Real Reasons Behind Illegal Immigration”, 63,000 unaccompanied minors illegally crossed the border from Mexico into America in October 2014. Palans states that these children were fleeing their countries because of the violence that was taking place in them. Traveling through the desert is no easy task for a child, not even for an adult. All illegal immigrants risk their lives in order to find safety and a better life in America. In the article, “The Human Tragedy of Illegal Immigration: Greater Efforts Needed to Combat Smuggling and Violence”, author and Senior Policy Analyst, Ray Walser, describes a violent act that cost the lives of 72 illegal immigrants. According to Walser, 72 illegal immigrants were kidnapped and assassinated by a drug gang as punishment for the illegals not joining their gang. Walser states that, “Violence against illegal border-crossers has become a regular occurrence around land and sea borders over the past decade. Criminal acts committed against illegal immigrants include kidnapping, robbery, extortion, sexual violence, and death at the hands of cartels, smugglers, and even corrupt Mexican government officials” (Wasler 1). This clearly explains how difficult and hazardous crossing the border can be, however illegal immigrants continue to try over and over again in order to find themselves safe in America. America needs to give these immigrants a chance instead of turning them around and telling them to back to their countries.
On the contrary, illegal immigration is a negative thing because it exposes America to crime and even terrorism.
As a result of these immigrants entering America illegally, there is no documentation on them; therefore, those who wish to move about America freely committing crimes as they please can do so because the government has no record of them ever being here. In the article, “Bleeding Arizona: The State’s Crackdown on Illegals is as Much About Drugs as Immigration”, author Ed Warner, former editor-reporter for the Voice of America, explains a situation where illegal immigration became an issue because of crime. In his article, Warner explains an event where a man and his dog were killed on their ranch, which is close to the border, by an unknown criminal. It is assumed that the murderer was an illegal immigrant who had crossed into America near the man’s farm. According to Warner, the murderer remains a mystery. Another reason for why undocumented illegal immigrants are a negative thing for America is because they put the country at risk for terrorism. In the article, “Immigration: A National Security Threat?”, author and member of the Committee of U.S. Latin American Relations, Albaro Tutasig, explains that after 9/11/2001, “the George W. Bush administration redefined the role of immigration agencies... The newly created Department of Homeland Security took over jurisdiction of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), thus establishing immigrants as threats to internal security” (Tutasig). Clearly, Americans felt so threatened by the idea of illegal immigration allowing terrorists into their country that they took immigration laws and made them more extreme. To recap, illegal immigration can be a negative thing for America because it creates a larger possibility of criminals and terrorists entering
America.
Without a doubt, immigration can be both a good thing and a bad thing, but it is up to the American government to find a way for those illegal immigrants who are not criminals to be able to cross the border and yet at the same time to protect the country from terrorists. The most obvious compromise is to allow illegal immigrants who are seeking safety in the U.S. to cross the border, but only if they are willing to have their fingerprints and DNA documented. This will lower the crime rate of illegal immigrants but at the same time the illegal immigrants can find safety in the U.S. Because terrorism is something that is greatly feared in America, the documentation of finger prints and DNA will allow us to know which immigrants are known terrorists if there are any among the group. This compromise will work because it is a way for the government to keep track of what illegal immigrants are doing while in America and to ensure that they are not in the U.S. for terrorist acts. To further the safety of America, the government can require a checkup on all illegal immigrants every six months for the first four years of them being in America to ensure that they are not committing crimes. One of the most important things of this compromise is that the illegal immigrants feel safe and that the American citizens feel safe as well. To summarize, illegal immigration is something America can gain from but at the same time people fear that the undocumented citizens pose a threat to them; therefore, by documenting and requiring six month checkups for the first four years both the immigrants and the Americans gain something.
To sum up, illegal immigration is something that America has always struggled with. However, it is important to remember that without immigrants, America would have never been founded. There are good things and there are bad things about illegal immigration. The good things include America providing safety to those in need to America being a reward to those who have risked everything. Whereas the bad things include, allowing criminals and terrorists into America. The compromise I have created is a way that both the Americans and illegal immigrants can be safe. Although illegal immigration is something that is scary for both parties, there is no reason for America to start refusing these people now.
