According to Aristotle, friendship is a single soul dwelling in two bodies. Webster defines a friend as one attached to another by affection or a favored companion. Facebook has given the term a new connotation in recent years. Friendship exists in many forms on many levels. Many friends will be fleeting throughout one’s life, but the genuine intimacy in which two people can share the most valued experiences, unwavering commitment throughout life’s challenges, and many memories of fun filled celebrations and vacations should carry a best friendship to one’s last breath.
A true friendship has a level of intimacy that has developed over time, through experiences and trust. In a world of dishonesty, deceit, lies, the trust within the relationship provides a haven between the friends. This sanctuary provides a sense of freedom from an attitude of defense and ridicule. The true friend will not allow the other to make a life altering, unethical or immoral decisions. A friend will provide sincere constructive criticism with the best interested of the other in mind. This loving effort to correct harmful behavior, provides a clear perception pointing to the negative consequences of the actions. Recognizing the trust within the friendship provides the other to accept the correction from a place of love and concern.
The unspoken promise to the friend’s wellbeing promotes feelings of unconditional love, which is a pure love, most people experienced first with our biological families. This natural relationship usually provides complete commitment for the well-being of one another. To have this same level of commitment and devotion to another outside of the family unit represents a true friendship. We all face losses in our lives, deaths of love ones, divorce, and financial crisis.
