dealing with nativism.
Incorporating immigration into our project was essential to our topic of peopling because without immigrants, the United States would be very different and not as diverse as it is today. Contrasting illegal and legal immigration was also a key point in our project because it expressed different ways of life and showcased how even if you are from a less developed country, you can succeed through earning an education. For example, Kelly Hyles and Augusta Uwamanzu-Nna, the child of immigrants were able to go against the odds and were accepted into all eight Ivy League institutions. By displaying their successes within our project, we hoped to dispel the stigma of immigrants being lazy and “leeches”, that take American tax dollars by using welfare. A second point that would be essential to understanding the benefits of immigration was to show the statistics on immigrants
that enter the more prestigious and skilled fields of work. Specifically, we chose to focus on the amount of immigrants in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) because of how that field is on the rise and many in STEM make great contributions to innovations in modern day. On the other hand, we also focused on illegal immigration. We chose to look into this topic because of how popular and debated it is getting in the media recently. When researching we found a lot of information, which spelled out the facts of the arguments for and against amnesty for illegal immigrants, that was not being showcased in the media. By displaying these details, we are able to educate the reader on the modern day politics of illegal immigration and to present them with the facts.
The topic of nativism was chosen to be in our history exhibit because its recent resurgence in American culture and the many forms that it has taken in current events. As a result of growing terror threats and attacks, many people have become increasingly islamophobic and angry towards the Muslim religion, blaming them for the attacks. Generally, on account of things such as illegal immigration, society has grown to be more xenophobic, meaning that they fear people from other countries. One example of this that was in recent news was found in the many remarks of Donald Trump and his plan to build a wall along the border of Mexico. We found that although some view this as a tightening of illegal immigration policy, others see it as a blatant act of nativism. The latter perspective is mostly based on the idea that Trump fails to see the benefits of immigrants and is being racist, a trait which corresponds to some of his earlier remarks this year.
Throughout this project, there were also a few things which we decided not to include. One of the things that was left out was a discussion regarding the factors that compel people to immigrate to America. We did not exhibit this topic primarily because we felt that that did not aid in supporting the case which we were building up: the benefits and successes of immigrants in America. Another subject matter that was not included in our presentation was the refugee crisis. This was because we felt that not only was media coverage on this issue declining but overall action was declining as well. Due to this, less information would be available on this topic since it was left unresolved.
