The immortal soul Where were you - your soul, your spirit - before you were born? If the soul is immortal, did it have a "life" before your birth? Plato believed that the soul existed prior to our existence in human form. In Plato’s theory, “ Our souls possess knowledge of the Forms before we are born, and with determination, intelligence, and virtue, we can enjoy a blessed communion with the Forms after death”, (Melchert, 2002, p.143). In Plato’s reasoning, man is meant to attain goodness and return to the Form through the experiences of the transmigration of the soul. Plato’s theory also suggested that a higher supreme being as the creator of the world. The Holy Bible states in Job 32:8: “But there is a spirit in man and the inspiration of the Almighty giveth them understanding”, (Job, 2002, p. 356). As I believer of the Lord God’s Word, I faithfully believe that we inherit our spiritual being from God; therefore in this paper I will construct why I agree with Plato’s theories. However, Scientists tell us that humans evolved from apes but Plato saw man 's existence as divided into the material and spiritual realms. I believe that Genesis 2:7 supports Plato’s reasoning: “And the Lord God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul” (Moses, 2002, p. 2). When God gave man the ‘breath of life’, He also gave man His spirit; therefore I believe with the transferring of God’s spirit into man’s earthly body we can see how it is possible for our souls to exist prior to our birth. I see God as the “one true and living God’, creator of heaven and earth, almighty, eternal, who is omnipotent, omniscient, and omnipresent. Other verses of the Old Testament also supports Plato’s view that our souls

Plato was a dualist and so believed that human beings consisted of two parts- body and soul. This view is portrayed throughout Plato’s famous theory of the Forms of which he suggests that true substances are not physical bodies, but are the eternal Forms that our bodies are merely the imperfect copy. In his Theory he tells of a World of Forms representing knowledge, which he also names the ‘real’ world and the world of Particulars signifying opinions, the world in which we live in. The Forms come from a world of perfection which are illuminated by the Form of the Good which is at the top of the hierarchy and is the source of which the other Forms stemmed from.…

Another reason Plato believed the soul is distinct is the idea that the body distracts us from purpose. The soul gives us the ability to reason where as the body has to be guided by the soul in order to make rational decisions. As well as this he believed that the soul cannot be split into parts not can it change as it is external, unlike the body.…

Plato’s conception of the soul is that it is an open vessel. Each has the capacity and ability to learn and to receive knowledge but first the whole being must be open to new knowledge and to learning. However some people are very close minded and set on what is already in front of them and refuse to open their minds. In order for one to become enlightened they must want to learn and must work for their knowledge.…

What is the spirit of a man? Where did our personalities come from? What influences our personality? We know that our environment which includes our family, culture and communities’ influence us but what is behind our personalities? Should we think of the self as a complex chemical substance or as a spirit? We find ourselves identified with God in Genesis 1:26 (New International Version) in this book the Lord God is found speaking to other members of the Godhead and says, “Let us make mankind in our image, in our likeness, so that they may rule”, in Genesis 2:7 (NIV), he continues to tell us about our creation in the next chapter by saying, “the LORD God formed a man from the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living being.” This tells us that our personality comes from God and that it is he that has made us and not we ourselves” Psalms 100: 3 (NIV).…

In this essay I will be working with the concepts of knowledge and true belief. I will show how they differ in two different Plato texts. I will first work to show what the concepts are and how they are different. I will then work to provide the necessary background information for each text, and separately explain how these concepts are treated in the two different texts. Next after having explained the concepts use in the text I will highlight the differences in the two accounts. Finally I will work to show that while the two accounts do differ the differences can be reconciled, so Plato is really saying the same thing in both texts.…

In conclusion, I agree with the statement, because we can’t see the soul and there is no proof of its existence. Also, I think NDEs are just scientific phenomenon that we not yet know about, and DNA and electric impulses in our mind control our body, but not souls. Moreover, soul is more a religious idea than a scientific idea, and I think science is more reliable. Therefore, I don’t think we have a soul.…

As soon as you were created your destiny is already set for you. No choice in what you want to do; you are a slave to the world. In Kazuo Ishiguro’s Never Let Me Go clones are created to serve the human society. Miss Lucy says, “Your lives are set for you. You’ll become adults…before you’re even middle aged, you’ll start donating your vital organs” (Ishiguro 81). The clones are destined to be donors for the rest of their living lives. The question is do clones have souls? Many people have their view on the soul. They say that they don’t have souls or that they are born with it. Others say that our soul grows with them. Kazuo Ishiguro's Never Let Me Go parallels Plato's Allegory of the Cave from an Aristotlean perspective where the soul's essence precedes existence.…

    Life after death

Death is the end of the functions of one’s body, but is death the end? Dualists, who are those that believe the body and soul are separate entities, believe that there is life after death, however materialists and monists, those who believe human beings are made up of one entity: the body, believe that death is the cessation of life. Moreover, life after death may be disembodied (separate from the body) as Plato argued, leaving the body to corrupt on earth, or life continues in some bodily form for the dead. Is the claim that there can be no disembodied existence after death a valid one?…
